Brushed: fine directional grain, matte, the easiest to live with on a low hung fixture.
Polished brass: mirror bright, reflects the room back, strongest against dark paint.

Terms used here

How far apart should a row of three hang?

Roughly 24 to 30 inches from center to center over a table or counter, with the end fixtures about six inches in from each edge. Line them up on the surface underneath rather than on the ceiling above, because the eye reads the two shapes together.

Does a warm metal finish work in a small room?
