How to choose luxury lighting for a room

Start with the sightline rather than the ceiling. A fixture at this level is bought to be looked at, so the decision is where the eye lands when someone walks in. Over a dining table, in a stairwell seen from two floors, above an island, beside a mirror. Those four positions repay the spend; a corridor rarely does.

Then read the material against the room's daylight. Alabaster and opal glass glow rather than sparkle and suit a room used in the evening. Cut crystal throws points of light and needs a clear lamp to do it. Solid brass warms under low light and cools under north facing daylight. Marble and travertine shift with the light through the day and never look flat.

Scale and support for luxury lighting

Fixtures at this level are heavier and wider than their standard equivalents, so two numbers decide whether one fits. The measurements below are the ones to check on the product page before anything else.

• Weight: anything past 35 pounds needs a brace or a joist, not a standard ceiling box.
• Diameter: over a table, about half to two thirds the table width.
• Drop: 30 to 36 inches from a dining table to the bottom of the fixture.
• Stairwell clearance: at least seven feet above the highest tread the fixture passes over.

Natural stone and hand blown glass vary from piece to piece, so expect the veining or the wall thickness in front of you to differ from the photograph. That variation is the material working as intended rather than a fault.

Questions about this range

What makes one fixture cost several times another?

Material and process. Solid brass, natural stone and hand blown or hand cut glass take longer to work and cannot be stamped out. A hand woven shade carries hours of labor that a molded one does not. The design work behind the proportions is the other half.

Can a large fixture go on a standard ceiling box?

Only up to the box's rated load, which is well below the weight of most fixtures on this page. Above that an electrician fits a brace bar or fixes into a joist. Check the weight on the product page and settle this before the fixture arrives.

Does natural stone need special care?

Only a dry or barely damp cloth. Alabaster, marble and travertine are porous, so household sprays and anything acidic mark them. Dust them the way you would dust a stone surface elsewhere in the house and leave chemical cleaners out of it.
