Pendant Lights & Chandeliers

Pendant Lights & Chandeliers

A pendant is one fixture on one drop, sized to the surface below it. A chandelier is a frame carrying several lamps at once, sized to the room: add the room length and width in feet and read the total as inches. Over a dining table, both hang 30 to 34 inches above the tabletop.

  • Pendant: one source over one spot, shade about half the table width or a third of the island depth
  • Chandelier: diameter in inches equals room length plus width in feet
  • Height over a table: 30 to 34 inches from the tabletop to the lowest point

What separates the two shapes

A pendant is one fixture on one drop. It carries a single shade, or a small cluster on a shared canopy, and it puts light on a defined area beneath it. That makes it the natural pick over an island, a sink, a nightstand or a stairwell, wherever the light has to land on something specific.

A chandelier is a frame carrying several lamps at once, spread across arms or tiers. It throws light outward as much as downward and it occupies vertical space, so it reads as the centerpiece of a room rather than as a work light. Dining rooms, entryways and tall stairwells are where it earns its space.

How the two differ

Pendant and chandelier
A pendant carries one light on a single drop. A chandelier carries several on one frame. Both hang from the same ceiling box, so the choice is about how many points of light the room should show.
Cord pendant
The most common build among the pendants here. A flexible cable shortens at the canopy, which lets the drop be set on site instead of being fixed before the order.
Flush and semi flush
A flush fixture sits against the ceiling, a semi flush drops a few inches below it. Both appear on this page and both are the answer under a low ceiling where a hanging frame would be in the way.
G9
A small two pin capsule lamp used in many of the multi light frames here. Count the sockets on the product page before buying lamps, since a wide chandelier can take a dozen of them.
Dimmable on request
Many pages in this range list dimming as available on request rather than fitted as standard. Ask before ordering when a dimmer is already on the wall, because the driver has to match it.

Which one suits your ceiling

Measure the height and name the job first. Under eight feet, a single drop or a compact frame keeps the headroom. From nine feet up, a tiered fixture fills the volume a low profile fitting leaves empty. Over a long island, two or three drops in a row cover ground one central fixture cannot.

Scale settles the rest. A drop is sized to the surface below it, roughly a third of the island depth or less. A frame is sized to the room: add its length and width in feet, then use that number in inches as a rough diameter. The two category pages below go into hanging heights in detail.

Can a single drop work over a dining table?

Yes, particularly a wide one. One large shade over a table does the same job as a small frame and reads quieter. Hang the bottom 30 to 34 inches above the tabletop and keep the shade to about half the table width.

How many arms should a frame have?

That follows the room rather than a fixed rule. Small dining rooms sit well with four to six lamps, larger rooms with eight or more spread over two tiers. More arms mean more width, so check the overall diameter against the table before settling on a count.

Mounting heights, diameters and clearances on this page follow common US residential practice rather than a single published standard. For color temperature and the lumen output that replaces a given incandescent wattage, see Purchasing Energy-Efficient Light Bulbs from the U.S. Department of Energy, which lists 2700K as warm, 3000K as soft, 3500K as neutral and 4100K as cool. Lighting level standards are published by the Illuminating Engineering Society.
