How to choose cluster pendant lights
Start with the height of the space, not the width. This shape earns its keep in a stairwell void, under a double height ceiling, or above a round table where one pendant would look stranded. In a room with an eight foot ceiling the stagger has nowhere to go and the effect flattens out.
Then count shades. Three reads as a composition, five or seven fills a taller void, and even numbers tend to look paired rather than gathered. Glass keeps the group visually light. Opaque shades make it read as one mass, which suits a high ceiling and crowds a low one.
How the shades are arranged
| Arrangement | Best in | What it does | Price here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two shades on stems | A kitchen island, a narrow table | Two pools with a gap between them | $149 to $280 |
| Three in a row | A long island, a bar counter | One rod, so only one ceiling box is needed | $125 to $349 |
| Branching arms | A dining table, an open stair | Spreads sideways as well as down | $260 to $310 |
| Cluster of spheres | A round table, a tall entry | Reads as one mass of light points | $520 to $5,569 |
| Tall cascade | A stairwell, a double height hall | Lights several floors from one point | $579 to $4,459 |
| Many shades on one plate | A kitchen, a family dining room | A single compact group, not a long run | $149 to $710 |
Terms used on cluster fittings
- Cord pendant
- A cord pendant hangs on flexible cable rather than a rigid rod, so the drop can be shortened when it goes up. In a cluster that counts, since the shades are set at different heights on purpose.
- Stagger
- Stagger is the difference in drop between shades. Over a round table a tight stagger reads as one object, while a wide stagger down a stairwell reads as a cascade and needs the height to carry it.
- Canopy
- The canopy is the plate at the ceiling where every cord gathers. A cluster hangs from one box, so the width of that plate sets how far apart the shades can spread before the cords start to lean.
- Shade count and output
- More shades do not mean more light. Each one usually takes a modest lamp, so a cluster gives a spread of soft points rather than the single strong pool one large pendant would give.
- Dimmable on request
- Two fittings here are made dimmable only when ordered that way. With several lamps in one cluster that matters more than usual, since all of them rise and fall together on one circuit.
Drop and stagger for cluster pendant lights
One canopy means one junction box, so installation runs like a single pendant. What takes time is setting the individual cord lengths before the canopy goes up.
- Over a round table: lowest shade 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop.
- Stairwell: lowest shade at least seven feet above the highest tread in use.
- Stagger: 6 to 12 inches between the bottoms of adjacent shades.
- Spread: keep the whole group inside two thirds of the table diameter.
Lay the cords out on the floor first, in the order they will hang, then adjust once from a ladder. Reworking a length with the canopy already fixed means taking the entire fixture down again. Tape a label to each cord as it is set, because they look identical once coiled.
How many shades suit a round table?
Three over a 36 to 48 inch top, five over anything wider. Hold the outermost shades inside two thirds of the tabletop diameter so nobody seated has to look through the group at the person across from them.
Can the cord lengths be adjusted?
On most models, yes, within the cord supplied. The canopy grips each cord at a set point and the excess coils above it, so shortening is straightforward and lengthening is not. Check the maximum drop listed on the product page against your ceiling height first.
