Dimmable Table Lamps

Dimmable table lamps handle two jobs from one spot: bright enough to read by, low enough to leave on all evening. Beside a bed or a sofa, that range matters far more than peak output ever does. Only lamps whose specifications state dimmable are gathered on this page.

How to choose dimmable table lamps

Settle first on where the control sits. Some models dim from a rotary or touch control on the base or the socket, which needs no wiring and no switched outlet. Others rely on a compatible wall dimmer or a dimmable bulb. The method is listed on each product page and it shapes daily use.

Then think about the shade. A lamp beside a bed gets read from below, so an opaque or lined shade keeps the source out of the eye line at low settings. A translucent shade glows across its whole face and doubles as a soft room light at the bottom of the range.

Sizing and placement of dimmable table lamps

Standard figures for a nightstand or a side table.

  • Total height: 24 to 30 inches from the table surface to the top of the shade.
  • Shade bottom: level with the seated eye, roughly 40 to 42 inches from the floor.
  • Shade width: about twice the width of the base.
  • Nightstand: leave three inches clear on each side of the base.

Height decides whether a lamp reads for work or for atmosphere. Too tall and the bulb shows beneath the shade from a seated position. Too short and the light lands on the table rather than on the page. Measure from the table surface rather than from the floor, since nightstand heights vary by several inches.

Does a touch base need a special bulb?

Often yes. A touch base that dims by cutting the load wants a bulb built for dimming, and a standard LED will usually buzz or step badly instead. Models with an integrated LED handle it internally and take no bulb at all. The product page says which applies.

Can a lamp be dimmed from a wall switch?

Only where the outlet is switched and the wall control is a dimmer. Plenty of rooms have a switched half outlet built for exactly this. Where none exists, choose a lamp carrying its own control instead of rewiring the circuit.
