Boho Wall Sconces

Boho wall sconces work on a wall the way a textile does. A woven or natural fiber shade breaks the beam into pattern, so the fixture puts texture on the plaster instead of a plain circle of light. The effect belongs on a wall you look at rather than one you walk past.

How to choose boho wall sconces

Decide what the fixture has to do. A shade open at the top and bottom throws two cones onto the plaster and gives the strongest pattern. A closed fiber shade glows softly and lights very little beyond itself. For a bedside fitting that has to serve a book, look for an adjustable arm or a downward opening instead.

Then check the material against the room. Rattan, cane, seagrass and cotton cord all soak up moisture, so a steamy bathroom is the wrong place for any of them. A bedroom, a landing or a reading corner keeps the fiber dry and puts the texture where it gets noticed. Cotton cord and jute also hold dust, so pick a spot you can reach with a brush.

Projection and reach of boho wall sconces

Woven shades run wider than metal ones, and the number that catches people out is projection: how far the fitting stands off the wall.

  • General height: 60 to 66 inches from the floor to the center of the fixture.
  • Beside a bed: 30 to 36 inches above the mattress, or level with your shoulder seated.
  • Hallway projection: stay under 5 inches so a passing shoulder clears it.
  • Spacing: 8 to 10 feet apart along a corridor wall.

Is a woven fitting bright enough to read by?

Usually not on its own. Fiber absorbs a good share of the output and spreads what is left across the wall. Pair it with a table lamp on the nightstand, or choose a design with an open bottom that drops light straight onto the page. The pattern on the wall and the light on the page rarely come from the same fitting.

Can these go in a bathroom?

Natural fiber and steam do not agree, so a full bathroom is a poor match. A powder room with a fan and no shower is workable. Check the product page for what each fixture is rated for, and keep it well clear of the tub.
