Bathroom accessories

Bathroom accessories get wiped down more than anything else in the house, so material and mounting decide how they age. This page holds two groups: open shelves for the things you reach for every morning, and lit vanity mirrors that put light on your face rather than behind it.

How to choose bathroom accessories

Two questions come before anything else. What goes on the wall, and at what height. A shelf over the sink keeps bottles off the counter, but it has to clear the faucet arc and the mirror above it. A lit mirror does the job a ceiling fixture does badly, since overhead light drops shadow straight down the face.

Material decides the rest. Stainless steel and solid brass take constant humidity without complaint. Powder coated aluminum holds its color and resists the spotting plain steel picks up. Tempered glass wipes clean and disappears against tile, while wood and stone read warmer and want a wipe rather than a soak. Matte black and brushed nickel hide water marks; polished chrome shows every drop.

Finish is the last call. Match the metal already on the faucet, or make the contrast deliberate: two metals in a small room read as a choice, three read as an accident. On lit mirrors, check the color temperature listed on the product page before ordering.

Mounting heights and tile fixing for bathroom accessories

The figures below are the ones US bathroom fitters work to, all measured from the finished floor.

  • Vanity mirror: center the glass 60 to 65 inches up, leaving 5 to 10 inches between the backsplash and the bottom edge.
  • Shelf over a toilet: the lowest shelf sits about 24 inches above the tank lid.
  • Towel bar: 42 to 48 inches up, with a ring beside the sink at 50 to 52 inches.
  • Anchors: drill tile slowly with a carbide or diamond bit, land the anchor in the wall behind the tile, and stay off the grout line.

Width settles the look. A mirror reads right at the vanity width or slightly narrower, never wider. Find the studs before drilling: a hollow wall takes toggle anchors, a stud takes a plain screw, and the difference shows once a shelf carries glass bottles.

What to check before ordering

Solid brass
The body material behind most faucets on this page. It resists corrosion better than a plated alloy and carries the weight you feel in the handle. The product page names the material, and it is the first thing to read.
Single hole and three hole
A single hole faucet drops through one opening, a three hole set mounts the spout and the handles separately. Count the holes already drilled in your counter before ordering, and check the spacing between them.
Wall mounted
The faucet comes out of the wall with the valve concealed behind it. That has to be planned before the wall is tiled, so it suits a refit rather than a swap. It leaves the counter clear and easier to wipe.
IP44
A body protected against splashing water from any direction. The lighting on this page that carries it can go nearer the basin. Anything rated for dry use only belongs away from the shower zone.
Rechargeable battery
The lit mirrors here run from a cell charged over a cable, with no wiring at all. That is what lets a mirror sit on a wall with no circuit behind it, and the runtime drops as the brightness goes up.

Questions about shelves and lit mirrors

How high should a vanity mirror hang?

Center the glass 60 to 65 inches from the floor, which lands near eye level for most adults. Leave 5 to 10 inches of wall between the backsplash and the bottom edge. When two people of different heights share one vanity, split the difference instead of centering on either.

Can a shelf be fixed straight into tile?

Yes, with the right bit and anchor. Drill through the glaze slowly using a carbide or diamond bit, then set the anchor in the drywall or masonry behind the tile. Keep clear of the grout line, which crumbles under load, and mark the spot with painter's tape.

What color temperature suits a mirror light?

Around 3000K reads warm and sits easily with a tiled room. 4000K and above shows color more literally, which suits shaving and makeup. Check the specification on each product page, since some mirrors are fixed at one setting and others switch between several.
