Bamboo Chandeliers

Two qualities separate bamboo chandeliers from other woven frames: weight and color. The stems are hollow, so a frame three feet across stays light on the ceiling box, and the fiber carries a more golden tone than rattan once a lamp is lit behind it. The result is a warm, open frame rather than a solid shade.

How to choose bamboo chandeliers

Start with the room, because the material has a narrow range. Bamboo belongs where other natural fibers already are: linen, jute, unpainted wood, stone floors, coastal and tropical schemes. Dropped into a room of lacquer and polished stone it reads as an accident rather than a contrast.

Then check the weave density. An open lattice throws light through the gaps and prints a pattern across the ceiling, which is the reason most people choose the material. A tight weave holds the light inside and behaves closer to a solid shade, giving a softer glow and far less pattern. Both are correct; they are different fixtures.

Scale and output from bamboo chandeliers

A woven frame absorbs a share of what the lamp puts out, so treat it as a decorative source and plan the room around that. Over a dining table, hang the lowest point 30 to 34 inches above the tabletop and keep the diameter to about half the table width. Bamboo runs wide for its weight, so a frame that looks modest in a photograph can measure 30 inches across.

Outdoors, bamboo goes only where the product page says it can. Under a covered porch the fiber stays dry; in open weather it swells and loosens. Read each listing before planning a location outside.

Does bamboo fade or discolor?

It lightens slowly in strong direct sun, the way any natural fiber does. Away from a window it holds its tone for years. Dust it with a soft brush along the run of the weave rather than across it, and keep it clear of a humid bathroom.

How bright can a woven frame be?

Less than an open metal frame of the same size, since the weave takes a share of the output. Use it for atmosphere and add recessed lights or a lamp for working light. A higher wattage bulb heats the fiber without solving the problem.
