A Closed Fluted Opal Glass Dome Lit Evenly by an Integrated LED Source

Building the light source into the lamp changes what the shade can be. With no socket to reach and no bulb to change, the opal glass could be made as a closed pillow, a wide flattened dome fluted all the way around with no opening anywhere in it. Because the glass is opal rather than clear, what you see when the lamp is on is the entire surface glowing at one level instead of a bright point inside a shade, and the flutes break that surface into fine vertical lines that catch the light at their edges. Below it a slim black cone tapers down to a brushed metal disc, which is heavy enough to hold a wide shade steady on a narrow surface. Do I need to buy a bulb?

The LED is built into the lamp, which is why the opal glass shade is closed all the way around with no opening for a socket. There is nothing to fit and nothing to replace, and it is also what lets the whole shade glow evenly instead of showing a bright spot inside.

How do I dim it?

With the touch switch on the base. A tap turns the lamp on and off, and holding it runs the brightness up and down. There is no switch on a cord and no separate dimmer to wire in.

How long does the battery last?

The 2000 mAh battery runs about three hours at full output and up to ten hours at the lowest setting. A full charge over the included USB cable takes roughly three hours. You can also leave it on the cable and use it as a plug-in lamp.

Which color temperature should I pick?

3000K is a warm yellow tone that suits a bedroom or a reading corner. 4000K is a neutral white, closer to daylight, which reads cleaner on a desk. 6000K is a cool white and the most clinical of the three. The choice is made at order and cannot be switched afterward.

A full charge over the included USB cable takes about three hours and then runs roughly three hours at full output or up to ten hours at the lowest setting, which is the difference between using it as a bright reading light for an evening and leaving it low on a shelf all night. You can also leave the cable connected and treat it as an ordinary plug-in lamp, on AC 110 to 240V. Dimming and switching both go through the touch point on the base: a tap for on and off, a hold to run the brightness up or down. For care, the flutes are the part that needs attention, because dust settles into the grooves and a cloth wiped across them skips the bottom of each one. Work a soft dry or barely damp cloth along the flutes instead, then dry the cone and the metal disc, and keep solvents away from all three.
