Wabi Sabi Table Lamp on a Brushed Wood Plinth
Wabi sabi is the Japanese idea that wear, irregularity and the marks of time are what make an object worth keeping. Here it shows up in the surface: the solid wood plinth is brushed rather than sanded smooth, so the soft growth rings are worn away and the harder grain is left standing proud, and the base ends up with a raked texture you can feel under a hand. On top sits a short cloth drum shade, wider than the plinth and squared off, which keeps the whole silhouette blunt and low rather than tapered. It stands 42 cm tall and 30 cm across. The switch is a rotary knob and it dims: turn it and the output runs smoothly from low to full with no fixed steps. Three finishes, and the shade follows the body: natural wood and walnut come with a white shade, black comes with a black one. The socket is E26 or E27 and no bulb is supplied.
