Ceiling Lamps

Ceiling lights fill a room evenly from overhead, in flush mount, semi flush and low profile shapes. Size the diameter by adding the room length and width in feet and reading the total as inches, so a 12 by 14 foot bedroom takes about 26 inches. Flush mounts suit ceilings under eight feet.

  • Diameter: room length plus width in feet, read as inches
  • Depth: 4 to 8 inches for a flush mount, 8 to 20 inches of drop for a semi flush
  • Clearance: at least 7 feet from the floor to the lowest point in any walking path

How to choose ceiling lights

Ceiling height decides the shape before anything else. Under eight feet, a flush mount sits tight to the drywall and keeps the head clearance a hallway or a low bedroom needs. At eight to nine feet, a semi flush hangs a few inches down and lets light bounce off the ceiling, which softens the whole room. Above nine feet, the ceiling can carry a pendant or a chandelier without the fixture looking stranded.

Then work out what the room asks the fixture to do. A hallway or a closet needs even coverage and nothing more, so a plain drum or dome does the job. A bedroom wants a diffused source you can look at from the mattress without squinting, which points to opal glass or fabric rather than exposed bulbs. A kitchen or a laundry needs real output on the work surface, and that usually means a wider diameter or a linear unit rather than one small dome.

Diameter is the figure people underestimate. Add the room length and width in feet and read the total as inches, so a 12 by 14 foot bedroom takes roughly a 26 inch fixture. That sizes the piece to the room rather than to the photograph. Finish is the last call. Matte black draws a clean outline on white plaster, brass and gold warm a room with wood in it, and brushed nickel disappears, which is often exactly what a hallway wants.

Mounting heights and clearances for ceiling lights

These are the figures US electricians and designers work to. Measure the room before you shortlist anything, because a fixture that clears a fan blade by an inch is a problem you cannot fix after installation.

  • Head clearance: keep the lowest point of the fixture at least 7 feet above the floor in any walking path.
  • Flush mount depth: 4 to 8 inches from ceiling to base, the usual answer under an 8 foot ceiling.
  • Semi flush drop: 8 to 20 inches, suited to ceilings of 8 to 10 feet.
  • Diameter: room length plus width in feet, read as inches, gives a workable fixture width.
  • Over a dining table: about half the table width, with the base 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop.

Two other measurements matter in specific rooms. In a stairwell, take the height from the highest tread rather than the landing, since that is where a head actually passes. Near a tub or a shower, read the moisture rating printed on the product page before you order, because a fixture drawn for a dry hallway does not belong over water.

Which ceiling light suits which room

Type Best in Light it gives What to check
Blown glass shade or globe A bedroom, a hallway Warm and diffuse, the lamp stays visible Shade diameter against the room width
LED ring or flat disc A living room, a home office Even output with no visible lamp Whether it dims, since models differ
Wood, bamboo or walnut frame A dining room, a bedroom Pattern on the ceiling, softer edges Bulb base, E27 on most of this range
Multi arm metal fixture A dining room, an entryway Several small sources, more sparkle Drop height and ceiling box support
Woven cotton, jute or mesh A bedroom, a reading corner Contained glow with little glare Keep fiber away from steam and grease
Ceramic with a brass socket A kitchen, a hallway A narrow pool under the fixture IP rating, IP20 is for dry rooms

Ceiling lighting terms

Flush mount
The fixture sits against the ceiling with no gap. It is the choice under 8 feet, and it is what most kitchen overhead lights use.
Semi flush mount
A short stem holds the fixture a few inches below the ceiling. It gives a little more presence than a flush mount without the swing of a pendant.
Suspended
The fixture hangs on a cord, a rod or a chain. A cord shortens at the canopy, a rod holds a fixed drop and suits a sloped ceiling better.
IP20 and IP44
IP20 is rated for dry rooms only. IP44 adds protection against splashes, which is what a bathroom or a covered porch asks for.
Integrated LED
The light source is built into the fixture and is not replaced like a bulb. It removes bulb choice from the decision and ties the fixture to its own lifespan.

Questions about overhead lighting

What is the difference between a flush mount and a semi flush?

A flush mount sits directly against the ceiling with no gap, which suits ceilings of eight feet or less and any spot people walk under. A semi flush drops 8 to 20 inches on a short stem, so light washes the ceiling as well as the floor and the fixture reads with more weight in a taller room.

How many fixtures does one room need?

One centered unit covers a bedroom or hall up to roughly 12 by 12 feet. Beyond that a single source leaves the corners dark, so add a second fixture, wall sconces or lamps. Long rooms and corridors read better with two matched pieces spaced evenly than with one oversized one.

Do integrated LED models work with a wall dimmer?

Only where the specifications say so. An integrated LED carries its own driver, and drivers differ in which dimmers they track, so match the product page against the switch already on the wall. A socketed fixture is simpler, since the bulb decides and a bulb can be swapped.

What color temperature suits a living space?

2700K to 3000K reads warm and works in bedrooms, hallways and living rooms. 3500K to 4000K is cooler and crisper, which suits a kitchen, a laundry or a garage. Mixing the two in one open plan room is visible from across the floor, so pick one number and hold to it.

Will one low profile fixture light a whole kitchen?

Not on its own. Treat ceiling lights as the ambient base layer and aim task light where you actually chop and read, using recessed cans, under cabinet strips or pendants over the island. A kitchen lit from one central point has bright walkways and shadowed counters.

Mounting heights, diameters and clearances on this page follow common US residential practice rather than a single published standard. For color temperature and the lumen output that replaces a given incandescent wattage, see Purchasing Energy-Efficient Light Bulbs from the U.S. Department of Energy, which lists 2700K as warm, 3000K as soft, 3500K as neutral and 4100K as cool. Lighting level standards are published by the Illuminating Engineering Society.
