No Visible Source at All, Which Is the Only Reason It Works Above a Bed

The problem with lighting a bed from the wall is the eyeline. A shaded fitting at that height puts a bright edge where someone lying down is looking, and a downlight drops a hot pool onto the pillow. This one solves it by having nothing to look at. The travertine block is closed on its face and open along the top and bottom edges, so the light leaves as two bands that wash the plaster above and below and the source itself is never in view from any angle in the room. What you see from the bed is lit wall. What you get on the pillow is reflected light, soft enough to leave on while someone else is asleep, which is a genuinely different thing from a dimmed reading lamp.

Why is this one good above a bed?

Because there is no visible source and no downward beam into anyone's eyes. The light leaves the top and the bottom edges as two soft bands on the wall, so a person lying down sees lit plaster rather than a lens. It washes a headboard without lighting a face.

Does it light up as well as down?

Yes, both. The stone is open above and below the walnut band, so one band washes up the wall and one falls below.

How far does it stand off the wall?

8.5 cm, which is shallow. Combined with a body only 22 cm wide, that lets it sit above a headboard or in a hallway without projecting into the space where someone passes.

Is there a bulb to buy?

The LED is integrated at a warm 3000K, which is what allows the body to stay this shallow and the source to stay hidden. Nothing is ordered separately and nothing is swapped later.

Is it rectangular or round?

Rectangular. Every photograph shows a rectangular travertine block with a walnut band, and that is the shape that arrives. Any diameter figure you have seen against it is an error.
