This is the detail that decides whether a hardwired sconce is usable where you want to put it. A fitting with no local control has to be operated from whatever switch the electrician wired it to, which is fine above a console and useless beside a bed, because turning it off means standing up and crossing a dark room. This one carries both an inline on and off switch and a pull cord hanging under the shade, so it is switched by the person sitting beneath it. The wall switch still works if the circuit has one. Nothing about that is glamorous and it is the reason people keep the lamp rather than replacing it after a month of reaching for a switch that is not there.

How is it switched?

Two ways on the fitting itself. An inline on and off switch and a pull cord hanging under the shade. It also answers a common wall switch on the circuit if the room already has one, so you are not forced to choose.

Why does that matter beside a bed?

Because a hardwired sconce with no local switch has to be turned off at the door. A pull cord means the person reading turns it off from the pillow without getting up or reaching across anyone, which is the whole reason a bedside fitting exists.

Which shade shape should I pick?

The wide shallow domes spread light sideways and suit an open wall above a console or a sofa. The taller ribbed shapes throw a narrower pool and read more upright, which works beside a bed or in a corner. All four cost the same.

Which lamp should I use?

An E26 or E27 lamp up to 40W, not included. A warm 2700K filament lamp suits the period shape and shows through the thinner glass. A frosted LED is the quieter choice behind the white shades.

Is the arm brass?

The arm and the fittings are nickel, a cooler silver tone, set against a black wood plate and a wood ball finial. If you are matching warm brass hardware elsewhere in the room, this is not the piece that will sit with it.

How do I clean it?

Let the lamp cool. Wash or wipe the glass shade with a barely damp cloth and dry it, taking the ribbed shapes gently. Buff the nickel dry rather than polishing it, and wipe the wood plate along the grain.

Model A is a ribbed dome, upright and the most decorative of the four. How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.

Can I change my mind after ordering?
