The Glass Is Pressed Into Folds, So the Rim Reads as a Scalloped Edge Line

A plain glass cone gives a clean circle at its edge and nothing else happens. This shade is pressed into folds that start narrow at the collar and widen as they travel outward, so by the time they reach the rim the edge is a run of shallow scallops rather than a circle. Two things follow. The outline of the fitting stops being geometric and starts being decorative, which is exactly what a period bedroom light is meant to do. And the light leaving the shade is slightly uneven, brighter where the glass is thinner at the crests and softer in the valleys, so the wash on the wall carries the same rhythm as the rim. It is a small piece of glassmaking doing all the work on an otherwise plain fitting.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Does it come with a pull chain?

A brass chain hangs under the shade in every photograph of this fitting, so plan on switching it at the lamp rather than at the wall. Write to us if you need that stated in writing for a specification.

How far does it come off the wall?

28.5 cm, since the arm rises and curves before the shade faces forward. That is a real projection, enough to bring the light clear of a tall dresser or a stack of frames, and enough to need measuring in a narrow corridor at head height.

Is the ruffle pressed or cut?

The glass is pressed into folds rather than cut, which is how period shades of this shape were made. The folds gather toward the collar and open out at the rim, so the edge is a scalloped line and the light leaving it is slightly broken rather than even.

Which lamp should I use?

An E26 or E27 lamp, not included. A warm 2700K filament lamp suits the period shape and shows through the thinner parts of the pressed glass. A frosted LED is the quieter choice if the fitting sits near eye level.

Is the arm brass or gold plated?

The detail table names metal and iron with a walnut body finish and does not specify the arm, while every photograph shows a warm brass tone.

How do I clean it?

Let the lamp cool. Wash or wipe the glass shade with a barely damp cloth and dry it, taking the ruffled rim gently since the folds are the thinnest part. Buff the brass arm dry rather than polishing it, and wipe the walnut plate along the grain.

Twenty Eight Centimeters of Reach on a Fitting Only Nineteen Centimeters Across

The numbers on this one are worth reading together. The shade is 19 cm across, which is small, and the arm carries it 28.5 cm out from the plate, which is a long way for a fitting that size. The result is a piece that is mostly arm: a thin brass line leaving the walnut plate, rising, curving over and setting a small shade well out into the room. That is what lets it clear a tall dresser, a leaning mirror or a stack of frames and still put light where you need it, instead of washing the wall behind whatever it is mounted above. The same reach is why it needs measuring in a corridor, where 28.5 cm at head height is enough to catch a shoulder going past.
