A Cord and an Inline Switch, So the Light Goes Where the Art Is Rather Than Where the Box Is

Hardwiring decides the position of a picture light before you have decided where the picture goes. A junction box has to be cut in, chased and fed, and once it is in, the art hangs to suit the light. This version reverses that. Two screws hold the plate, the cord drops to an outlet, and the whole fitting moves in twenty minutes when the painting moves to another wall. The inline switch is the second half of the argument: it puts the control within reach of the person standing at the vanity or sitting under the frame, instead of on a plate by the door. In a rented flat it is often the only version that is allowed at all, and what stays behind at the end is two filled holes.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Where does the cord go?

Down the wall from the base of the plate to an outlet, about 6 feet away at most. Most people run it straight down behind the furniture below, or clip it along the edge of a frame. There is no way to hide it in the wall without cutting the wall, which is the trade you accept for not needing an electrician.

Which plug do I get?

Choose US, UK or EU at order. The fitting runs on AC 110-240V, so the same bar works on either voltage and only the plug changes.

Can I dim it?

Yes, with an inline cord dimmer or a plug in dimmer module between the plug and the outlet. A hardwired wall dimmer does not apply to this version, because the supply reaches the fitting through the outlet rather than through the switch.

Is it safe above a bathroom mirror?

Above the mirror on a dry wall, yes, with the cord routed high and then down, clear of the basin and away from any wet surface. The rating is IP20, so no water protection at all.

Which length suits a painting?

About half to two thirds of the frame width. A 24 inch frame takes the 13.8 inch bar, a 36 inch frame the 17.7 or 22.8 inch, a 48 inch canvas the 29.5 inch. Matching the frame width exactly pushes light onto the wall past the edges.

Does the nickel match chrome fittings?

Close, not identical. Nickel is slightly warmer and softer than polished chrome, so beside a chrome tap it reads as a near match rather than a pair. Next to brushed steel it sits comfortably.

Three Finishes Against the Frame, Because the Metal Is Read Next to the Art and Not Alone

Brass, dark bronze and nickel are not three shades of the same decision. Brass warms a gilt frame, an oil painting and oak, and it is the finish that disappears into a traditional room. Dark bronze reads as a line rather than a shine, which is what a dark canvas or a black frame usually wants, and it holds up against iron hardware. Nickel is the cool option, closest to the taps and handles in a modern bathroom and to the steel edge of a contemporary print. The tube is the same in all three, so this is a decision about the room, not about the light. Look at what is already on the wall, then repeat that metal rather than introducing a fourth one.
