2 Light Wall Sconce with Opal Glass Orbs

Two Globes in One Capsule, Which Reads Quieter Than Two Separate Fittings

The usual way to get two points of light on a wall is to mount two sconces, and the usual result is a pair of objects competing with whatever else is on that wall. Here the two opal globes share one body: a wood capsule, rounded at both ends, with each globe set into the face so it sits proud of the wood. What you see is a single shape with two glows in it. That makes a real difference above a sideboard, beside a doorway or on the wall of a hallway, where the piece has to hold its own against furniture and artwork without adding clutter. The globes are opal, so the lamps never show, and the light leaves evenly in every direction rather than washing in one.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What is the difference between the two sizes?

The globes are the same on both, 10 cm across. What grows is the wood around them: the small capsule is 16 x 31 cm and reads tight, the large is 25 x 41 cm and gives each globe a wide margin. Depth stays 13 cm either way. Pick the small for a bedside or a hallway and the large for a wall that needs filling.

How is it switched?

Two ways. A pull chain hangs at the fitting, which is the useful one beside a bed or in a hallway with no plate nearby, and it also answers a common wall switch on the circuit, which is not included.

Which lamps does it take?

Two G9 lamps, one per globe, not included. A warm 2700K to 3000K lamp suits the opal glass. The glass hides the lamp completely, so an inexpensive LED gives the same look as a filament capsule here.

Is it bright enough to read by?

Beside a bed, yes with a warmer lamp at a reasonable output, since two globes at close range put a usable pool on a page. In a larger room treat it as ambient light and add a floor or a table lamp for reading.

Which finish suits a dark wall?

The light wood, because it separates from the wall and the globes read as part of a pale object. The walnut warms into a dark wall and the black almost disappears behind the two lit globes, which is the point if you want the light and not the fitting.

How do I clean it?

Let the lamps cool. Wipe the opal globes with a barely damp cloth and dry them. Wipe the wood along the grain with a barely damp cloth and dry it at once.

A Pull Chain on the Fitting, Which Decides Where You Can Actually Put It

A hardwired sconce usually depends on the circuit it is on, which means it lights up when a wall plate somewhere else is switched. That is fine over a stair and useless beside a bed. This one carries a pull chain at the fitting, so it works on its own whatever the plate is doing. The practical effect is that the piece can go where there is a supply but no convenient switch: either side of a doorway, halfway along a corridor, above a sideboard in a room whose only plate is by the door. It still answers a common wall switch if you have one on the circuit, so a pair can be run together from the door and then adjusted individually by hand.
