The honed travertine disc base and the fluted column seen close

A Honed Travertine Disc Under a Fluted Column and a Crisp White Fabric Cone

Three materials, stacked in the plainest way possible. At the bottom is a solid travertine disc, the warm cream stone used in Roman building, cut flat and honed rather than polished so the open pores stay visible and catch the light across the surface. Above it stands a column carrying vertical flutes along its full height, finished in a wood grain by water transfer printing, which is a durable printed finish rather than sawn timber and worth knowing before comparing it to a solid wood base. On top sits a crisp white fabric cone, 30 cm across, capped with a small turned wood finial. Total height is 45 cm, the usual scale for a nightstand, a console or a living room side table, and because the cone is steep the light falls mostly downward as a wide pool with a narrow band escaping over the top edge. The column comes in light wood, walnut or black, and every stone base carries its own pattern.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What is travertine?

A sedimentary stone laid down around mineral springs, the same material used in Roman building. It is warm in tone, cream to beige, and it carries open pores across the surface that give it its texture. Here it is cut as a flat disc and honed rather than polished.

Is the column solid wood?

The wood grain on the column is a printed finish, applied by water transfer printing over the body, and the flutes are part of the form underneath. It is hard wearing and consistent between lamps, but it is a finish rather than sawn timber, which is worth knowing before you compare it to a solid wood base.

How do the two switches work?

There is an inline on and off switch on the cord and a push button on the lamp. Either one will switch the light, so you can use whichever falls closer to your hand on the surface where the lamp sits.

Is a bulb included?

The socket takes a standard E26 or E27 bulb, LED or Edison. A warm LED at 2700K to 3000K suits the cream tone of the stone and the white shade; a cooler bulb reads flatter against both.

What kind of light does the cone give?

Mostly downward. The cone is steep and the fabric is white, so the bulk of the output falls as a wide pool below with a narrower band escaping over the top edge. That makes it a good reading lamp beside a chair and a soft one on a console.

How do I clean the stone?

A soft dry or barely damp cloth, dried straight away. Travertine is porous, so standing water, oils and acidic cleaners can stain or etch it, and coasters or a glass set down on the base are worth avoiding. Dust the fabric shade with a soft brush.

Two Switches, an Open E26 or E27 Socket and Porous Stone That Wants Dry Care

The lamp is wired with two controls, an inline on and off switch on the 150 cm cord and a push button on the lamp itself, so whichever falls closer to your hand on a given surface is the one you use. The socket is left empty. It takes a standard E26 or E27 bulb, LED or Edison, and the choice matters more than usual here: a warm bulb at 2700K to 3000K sits naturally with the cream of the stone and the white of the shade, while a cooler bulb flattens both. The one thing that needs a habit is the base. Travertine is porous, so standing water, oils and acidic cleaners can stain or etch it: wipe it with a soft dry or barely damp cloth, dry it straight away, and avoid setting a wet glass down on it. The fabric shade takes a soft brush, and the bulb should be cool before the shade is handled.
