Turned spindle table lamp seen from an angle, the disc turnings visible

A Domed Foot, a Disc, a Bead and a Waisted Column, Each Cut on the Lathe

Read the base from the bottom up and it is a sequence rather than a shape: a domed foot spreading onto the surface, a wide flat disc above it, a rounded bead, then a waisted column that narrows and swells again before it reaches the socket. Every one of those elements is turned separately and stopped cleanly against the one below, which is the difference between a genuinely turned profile and a molded imitation of one, and it is why the base throws a distinct shadow line at each transition instead of reading as a single tapered post. Two finishes handle that profile very differently. A warm walnut tone keeps the turning soft and lets it sit with wood furniture; a flat black removes the grain from the conversation and turns the whole stack into a graphic outline, which against a pale wall makes the shade look as though it is floating above a drawing.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What shape is the base exactly?

A turned spindle: a domed foot, then a wide disc, then a bead, then a waisted column rising to the socket. Each element is cut separately on the lathe and stops cleanly against the next, which is what gives the profile its shadow lines.

Is the wood oak or walnut?

The photographs show a smooth turned column in a walnut tone, and a flat black version of the same body. That is what we describe and what we sell. Write to us if you need the timber named for a specification.

How wide is the shade?

37 cm across, which is wide for a lamp 56 cm tall and deliberately so: the shallow cone shelters the turned base underneath and drops a broad circle of light onto the surface below.

Which finish for a pale room?

Black, if you want the base to register. Against a pale wall the black turning reads as a drawn outline and the shade appears to float above it. The walnut tone is the quieter choice and blends with wood furniture.

Which bulb does it take?

A standard E26 or E27 up to 40W, LED or Edison, not supplied. A frosted bulb is the safer choice, since the shade is open at the bottom and a clear filament shows from a low seat.

How do I clean the turned base?

Use a soft dry brush in the grooves between the discs and beads, where dust settles first, then wipe the flats along the grain with a barely damp cloth and dry them at once. Use a lint roller on the linen shade.

A Wide Shallow Cone in White Linen, and Why 37 Centimeters Is the Right Width

The shade is the reason the lamp reads as classic rather than as tall and narrow. It is white linen cut as a shallow cone 37 cm across, sitting on a lamp that stands 56 cm, so it is wide relative to its height and overhangs the turned base well beyond the domed foot. That proportion does two things. Visually it shelters the turning, which keeps the eye on the profile instead of on the socket and the hardware. Practically it drops a broad circle of light onto whatever the lamp is standing on, a console, a sideboard, a chest or a generous nightstand, rather than a narrow cone, which is what makes a decorative lamp of this kind usable for reading in an armchair beside it. The open bottom means a frosted E26 or E27 bulb up to 40W suits it better than a clear filament one, and no bulb is supplied.
