Six Panels, a Deeply Scalloped Hem, and a Toile Print in Gray on White

The shade is the lamp. Six panels of white fabric are seamed over curved ribs into a shallow dome, and the hem is then cut into deep scallops that follow those seams, so the outline is a wave rather than a circle and the lamp throws a repeating shadow pattern onto the wall behind it. Across the panels runs a printed landscape of trees and branches in gray, the sort of toile pattern that belongs on an old chair cover, and it behaves differently depending on the light: with the lamp off it is the first thing you notice, and with the lamp on it softens into a haze while the seams and the scalloped edge sharpen into the strongest lines on the object. A turned wood ball finial closes the top of the shade, so timber finishes the composition at both ends.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What is the print on the shade?

A gray on white landscape of trees and branches in the toile manner, printed across all six panels. It is clearest with the lamp off; once it is lit the print softens and the seams and the scalloped hem become the strongest lines.

How deep are the scallops?

Deep enough to read from across a room. The hem is cut in a wave that follows the panel seams, so the outline of the lamp is never a plain circle and the shade throws a repeating shadow onto the wall behind.

What shape is the base?

A turned walnut profile: a gourd swelling at the foot, a pinched neck above it, then two smaller repeats of the same curve rising to the socket, with a wood ball finial on top of the shade.

Which bulb does it take?

A standard E26 or E27, LED or Edison, not supplied. The panels are thin, so a frosted bulb is the better choice; a clear filament shows through the seams from a low chair.

Is more than one finish available?

One build: walnut with the gray toile shade. The choice here is the lamp itself rather than a configuration, which is why the pairing is fixed.

How do I clean it?

A lint roller or a soft brush on each panel, working from the seam outward, and nothing damp on the print. Wipe the turned base along the grain with a barely damp cloth and brush the tight grooves dry.

A Gourd Foot and Three Repeated Curves, Turned From One Piece of Walnut

Under the shade the base is a single turned profile that repeats one idea at three scales. It begins as a wide gourd sitting on the surface, pinches into a narrow neck, swells again into a smaller version of the same curve, pinches once more and then runs up to the socket. Cutting that from one piece of solid walnut rather than stacking separate turned parts is what keeps the transitions clean, and it is also why the grain reads continuously from the foot to the neck and differs in every lamp. The proportion is the familiar one: 28 cm across the shade on a 45 cm lamp, which is the height that works on a nightstand beside a bed and on a console in a hallway. One finish, one size, a standard E26 or E27 socket with no bulb supplied, and an inline switch on a 150 cm cord.
