Shades That Face Upward Turn the Whole Ceiling Into a Second Light Source

Point a fabric cone at the ceiling and the room changes character. The light leaves the shade, hits the plaster, and comes back spread across the whole surface, so there is no bright pool and no hard shadow under a chair. In a bedroom that is exactly right: nobody lying down is looking into a lamp, and the level in the room is even from wall to wall. Two things to know. A pale ceiling bounces far more than a dark one, so the same fitting reads dimmer in a room with a deep color overhead. And upward shades collect dust, so plan on brushing them out two or three times a year.

Why do the shades point upward?

So the light hits the ceiling and comes back diffused. It gives a soft, even wash instead of a pool, and it keeps the lamps out of the sight line of anyone underneath. It also means the fabric glows rather than glaring.

Is the column solid wood?

The specification lists metal, wood and glass, and the column with its ball finial is turned wood in a walnut tone. The arms, collar and canopy are metal in a gold finish.

Which lamps does it take?

E14 lamps, one per arm, max 15W each, not included. A small candle or golf ball shape fits inside the cone. Warm white around 2700K keeps the fabric cream and the walnut warm.

Three lights or six?

Three at 68 cm suits a bedroom or a small sitting room. Six at 80 cm is the general purpose size. Eight at 91 cm is for a large room, and needs about 30 cm of clear space around it to read properly.

Will it light a room for reading?

On its own, no. Upward shades give ambient light, which is flattering but soft. Keep a table lamp or a floor lamp for close work and let this one set the level of the room.

Can the shades be cleaned?

Dust them with a soft brush, working from the top of the cone down. Keep water off the fabric. Because they face up they collect more dust than a downward shade, so expect to brush them a few times a year.

Forty Nine Centimeters Tall, So a Wide Ring Still Clears an Eight Foot Room

The eight light version measures 91 cm across and 49 cm tall. That ratio is the useful part. A chandelier of the same width built with downward shades and a long stem would be 70 or 80 cm deep and would sit in your eye line across a sofa in an ordinary room. Here the arms sweep out rather than down, so the fitting spreads on the ceiling and leaves the room below it clear. It means you can use a wide fitting in a low room, which is usually the one thing you are told you cannot do, and it puts the decision back on the width of the furniture underneath rather than on the height of the ceiling.

Returns and Refunds

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.

Can I change my mind after ordering?

Yes. If you change your mind within 24 hours of placing your order, before it has been processed, we will refund you right away. After an order has shipped, please follow the standard return process described above.
