Hiding the Source Inside an Opal Cup Is What Keeps a Mirrored Shade Usable at Night

A mirrored shade with a bare lamp in it is uncomfortable to sit under, since the glass throws the source back at you from every curve. Putting a separate opal cup around the LED fixes that: the outside keeps its reflective finish and the light that reaches the room has already passed through white glass. Why is there a second shade inside?

The outer teardrop is mirrored, so light cannot leave through it cleanly. The opal cup holds the LED and does the diffusing, which is what lets the outside stay dark and reflective while the light arrives soft from the mouth of the shade.

Is the LED replaceable?

The module is built into the inner cup and rated for roughly 25,000 hours, which is years of normal evening use. When it does reach the end of its life the head is replaced rather than the bulb, so treat it like any other integrated fitting.

How far apart should three heads sit?

The bar sets the spacing at about 11 inches between centres on a 27.6 inch run, which suits a table up to around five feet. For a longer table, three single pendants hung from their own boxes let you spread them wider.

Does the smoke finish look dark when it is off?

Unlit it reads as dark chrome and mirrors whatever is around it, so it behaves like a reflective object rather than a lamp. That is worth knowing in a pale room, where it reads as a strong accent even during the day.

What height should it hang at?

Over a dining table, about 30 to 36 inches between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade keeps faces clear across the table. The 59 inch drop is cut down at installation, so most ceiling heights are covered.

Can it go over a stairwell?

A single head on the full 59 inch drop works well in a stairwell, where a long thin shape reads better than a wide one. Hang it so the bottom of the glass clears the highest step by at least seven feet and nobody meets it on the way up.

A Narrow Shade on a Long Cord Suits Corners Where a Wide One Would Be in the Way

At 7.9 inches across and 14.4 tall, this reads as a vertical line rather than a disc, which is what makes it hang well beside a sofa, in a stairwell or over a nightstand. A wide drum in the same spot has to be set higher to stay out of the way, and loses the pool of light it was hung for. Narrow and low beats wide and high in any corner someone actually sits in.

Returns and Refunds

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.
