A Shade Hanging at Sixty Inches Needs a Second Tier or You See the Lamp

Sixty inches off the floor is roughly eye level for someone sitting on a low sofa and chest height for someone walking by, which is the hardest place to hang a light. Is 81 inches too tall for a normal room?

It is nearly six foot nine, so it wants a ceiling of eight feet or more to look right. Under eight feet it reads as furniture that fills the corner, which some rooms can carry and most cannot. Measure the ceiling first. This is the arc for a tall living room, a stairwell landing or a room with a high window, and the smaller arcs exist for everything else.

What does the second tier on the shade actually do?

It cuts the view of the lamp. A single drum hanging at 60 inches puts the bright rim near eye level for anyone standing, and you see the source. The stepped lower tier hides it and softens the edge of the pool underneath. The light output is the same. What changes is how it feels to walk past it.

Can two people read under it?

How do I move it once it is together?
