No Shade at All on It, Because the Stone Block Itself Is Doing That Job

There is nothing on this fitting that a lighting catalog would call a shade. A rectangular block of yellow travertine stands on a small wood shelf and the lamp sits down inside it, so the stone walls enclose the source on four sides and the only opening is the top. What leaves the piece is a soft fan of light onto the plaster above, and what you see from the room is a square column of stone with a glow above it. That reduction is the whole idea: no diffuser, no reflector, no trim ring, just a solid block with a hole in the top.

Which way does the light go?

Up only. The block is open at the top and closed on every other face, so the output leaves above the stone and fans onto the wall. There is no downward pool at all, which makes this an ambient fitting rather than a task one.

Is the lamp visible?

From below and from the side, no, since the stone walls enclose it. From directly above, at close range, the open top exposes the source. Mount it above eye level and that never comes up; mount it low on a stair wall and someone on the landing may see in.

Pull chain or wall switch?

Pull chain if the fitting is beside a bed, because you switch it by hand from the pillow. Wall switch if it sits above a console or in a corridor on a circuit you already control from the door. It is chosen at order and not changed afterward.

Is the travertine block round or square?

Square. The block is rectangular in section, as every photograph shows, and the 10 cm figure is its width rather than a diameter.

Will the stone match the photographs?

Close, not identical. Travertine forms with voids and bands of color, so the pitting and the tone shift from block to block. On a piece this plain that variation is most of what you look at, and it is the reason the design works.

A Wood Shelf Carrying Solid Stone, Which Is Why the Piece Reads as Masonry
