The Taper Exists Because a Flat Solar Panel on a Wall Collects Nothing

This is the problem every wall mounted solar fixture has to solve. The sun moves across the sky above you, and a panel lying flat against a vertical surface sees almost none of it; the light arrives at a glancing angle and the cell barely wakes up. Tilting the panel is the only fix, and tilting it means the body has to grow thicker as it drops. That is where the wedge comes from. It is not a styling decision that happened to work out, it is the shape the physics demands, and the depth figures show it: 3.9 inches at the short size, 5.9 at the tall one, because a longer body needs a shallower slope to keep the same aim.

Why is the body a wedge?

So the cell can see the sky. A solar panel flat against a vertical wall collects almost nothing; tilting the upper face outward puts it at an angle to the sun and that is the difference between charging and not charging.

What do the louvers do?

They aim the output. The stack of fine blades lets light out downward in bands and blocks the horizontal path, so the steps below are lit and nobody coming up them is looking at a source.

Which size for a flight of steps?

The 13.8 inch at each landing or every third or fourth riser. The taller sizes throw their bands further down the wall and suit a single position beside a run of steps rather than a repeated one.

Does it need any wiring?

There is no cable to run and nothing to install beyond the back plate, which is the reason to use it on a garden retaining wall or a flight of exterior steps where no supply exists.

Will it charge on a north facing wall?

Poorly, and that is worth being direct about. The taper helps but it cannot manufacture sun. On a wall that never sees direct light, expect a short evening in summer and very little in winter.

Is it built for an exposed position?

Yes. The rating is IP65, dust tight and proof against water jets from any side. Do not immerse it. Brush the louvers clear now and then, because leaf litter lodges between the blades.

Louvers Send the Light Downward in Soft Bands and Block Off All the Rest

A step light has one job and one failure mode. The job is to show where the riser is. The failure is putting a bright source at knee height where people climbing the steps look straight into it. Louvers solve both at once. The lower face here is a stack of fine horizontal blades, each one shading the gap below it, so the output leaves along a downward path and the horizontal view of the source is closed off. What lands on the wall is a run of soft bands fading as they drop. What reaches the eye of somebody on the steps is nothing at all. The same principle runs every cinema aisle light ever specified.

Returns and Refunds

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.

Can I change my mind after ordering?

Yes. If you change your mind within 24 hours of placing your order, before it has been processed, we will refund you right away. After an order has shipped, please follow the standard return process described above.
