The lantern lit on a pillar with a house and planting behind it at dusk

A Pressed Pattern in the Glass Is Why This Lantern Sparkles at a Distance

Two lanterns of the same size and the same wattage can look nothing alike at fifty feet, and the glass is the reason. A plain panel puts out an even sheet of light that fades with distance into a soft blur. A pressed diamond pattern refracts at every facet, so the same output leaves as dozens of small bright points that hold their edge much further down a drive. It is the reason cut glass has been used on entrance lanterns for a century, long before anything was solar. Up close the effect is decorative rather than glaring, because no single facet carries much of the output, and the remote dimmer takes it down further on a mild evening.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What does the diamond pattern actually do?

It breaks the output into points. A plain panel gives one flat lit face; a pressed pattern refracts the light at every facet, so the lantern reads as a field of small highlights and carries further across a dark garden than its wattage suggests.

Which finish suits a brick pillar?

Bronze or copper. Both sit in the same warm register as red and buff brick and look settled rather than applied. Black is the choice on render, pale stone and painted masonry, where it gives the lantern a clean outline.

How tall is the largest size?

21.7 inches, on a footprint of 19.7 inches square, and it weighs about 10 kilograms. That is a fitting for a wide gate pier built to carry it, not for a timber post. The 11.8 inch version is the one for a standard pillar.

Is the copper finish solid copper?

The body is aluminum and copper is the finish on it. It reads as warm metal in a garden and it is far lighter to lift onto a pier than solid copper would be.

Can I turn it down?

Yes. It works with a remote dimmer, which matters on cut glass: at full output the pattern sparkles hard, and a step down turns it into a softer glow. It also switches itself on at dusk without any input.

Does it need any wiring?

The panel sits in the pagoda roof and the cell is inside the body, so nothing runs to the pillar. Give the roof a clear view of the sky, away from branches, and wipe the panel each season so rain and dust do not block it.

Three Finishes, and the Masonry Under It Should Make the Decision for You

Black, bronze and copper cost the same here, so the choice is purely about what the pier is made of. On red or buff brick, bronze and copper sit in the same warm register as the mortar and the clay, and the lantern looks like it has always been there. On white render, pale limestone or painted masonry, black gives a clean silhouette and keeps the shape legible by day when the fitting is off, which is most of the time. The one combination to avoid is a warm metal on a cool gray stone, where the finish reads as an accessory rather than as part of the entrance.
