Sixty Seven Inches Tall, Which Puts the Light Well Above the Outdoor Furniture Line

Almost every outdoor lamp is low. Lanterns sit on tables, bollards stand at knee height, and the result is light coming up from below, which is dramatic and not very useful. Interiors are lit the other way around, from above eye level, and that is what this height buys you. At 67.3 inches the shade clears the back of a sofa and the head of anyone sitting down, so the output falls onto the table, the cushions and the faces rather than raking across them. Set one beside a seating group on a terrace and the whole arrangement reads like a room. That is a different proposition from a lantern on the floor, and the only thing producing it is the height.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Why so tall for a garden light?

Because it lights like a room does. At 67.3 inches the shade sits above the back of a sofa, so the light comes down onto the table and the seats instead of up from the floor, which is how interiors are lit.

How stable is it on a terrace?

The foot flares into a wide trumpet and the mass is in the base, which is what a tall thin lamp needs. On soft ground or a windy roof terrace, set it against a parapet or a planter rather than in the open.

What is the shade woven from?

Polyethylene cord over a frame, not natural rattan. That is why it can stay out: the synthetic holds its color and its tension where a natural weave would take up water and go soft.

What does the weave do to the light?

It leaks. Light escapes through every gap as well as out of the top and bottom of the drum, so the shade itself reads as a lit texture and the pattern lands faintly on the wall behind.

Is there a switch or a cable to run?

It works with a common push switch, not supplied, and there is no cable to install because the cell is in the shade. In practice most people leave it on the dusk cycle and never touch it.

Can it stay out in the rain?

It is rated IP65 against dust and water jets, so rain is within it. Do not immerse it. Bring it in for a long winter, mostly so a tall lamp is not standing in a storm unattended.

A Stem Thin Enough to Disappear, Standing on a Foot Wide Enough to Hold It Down

A tall lamp has a structural problem and most designs solve it by thickening the pole, which is the one thing that makes the lamp read as equipment. This one goes the other way. The stem stays as thin as it can, a dark line rather than a column, and all the stability is pushed into the base, where the metal flares out into a trumpet that puts the weight at ground level. Lit at night against planting, the stem effectively vanishes and the shade appears to float at head height. By day the same thin line keeps the view across the terrace open. Two decisions, both about where to put the mass.
