Mouth Blown Glass Shaped Like Cracked Ice, and No Two Pieces Are the Same

The glass is mouth blown rather than pressed, and it is not shaped into anything regular. What comes out is an irregular faceted lump with hollows and ridges, closer to a piece of cracked ice than to a cube, and because it is formed by breath and hand no two are identical: the one that arrives will differ from the photographs in the placement of its facets and the thickness of its walls. That irregularity is what the lamp does with light. The glass is thick and uneven, so instead of a clean pool it throws bright points where the walls are thin and soft patches where they are heavy, and the wall behind picks up a scatter of both. Two colors are offered: smoke gray, which keeps the light cool and grayish and reads as sharp edges, and amber, which warms it and turns the whole lump into a block of honey once the bulb is on.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Is it really a cube?

It is a block rather than a cube. The glass is mouth blown into an irregular faceted lump closer to a piece of cracked ice, so the shape differs from piece to piece and the one you receive will not match the photographs exactly.

Smoke gray or amber?

Smoke gray keeps the light cool and grayish and reads as sharp edges and shadow. Amber warms it and turns the glass into a block of honey when lit, laying a golden cast on the surface around it.

How bright is it?

Soft and uneven, deliberately. The glass is thick and uneven, so the facets throw bright points and soft patches rather than a clean pool. It is an accent piece for a desk corner or a nightstand, not a reading light.

What bulb does it take?

A G9, which is the small two pin fitting, and not an E26 or E27 screw base. An LED of about 5W is the sensible choice and none is supplied. No driver and no battery are needed, it runs on AC 110 to 240V.

Where is the switch?

A small brass toggle is set into the wood plinth beside the glass. It sits within reach on the table, and it keeps the cord free of any inline box, which matters on a piece this small.

How do I clean it?

A soft dry cloth on the glass once the bulb has cooled, working into the hollows where dust settles. Wipe the wood plinth along the grain with a barely damp cloth and dry it at once, keeping moisture off the brass.

A Small Brass Toggle on an Oval Wood Plinth, and a G9 Socket Underneath

The base is as plain as the glass is irregular: an oval plinth of dark wood, hand cut and polished, with the glass resting on it at an angle and a small brass toggle set into the surface beside it. if it matters to you, ask us to confirm which arrangement ships. Underneath the glass is a G9 socket, the small two pin fitting rather than a screw base, so an E26 or E27 bulb will not go in. An LED of about 5W is the sensible choice and none is supplied. There is no driver and no battery to worry about: it runs straight off AC 110 to 240V on a 150 cm cord. The whole thing is 20 cm long, 12 deep and 15 tall, which is a desk corner, a nightstand or a shelf rather than a side table.
