Bright chrome hooded bar lit above a large framed picture on a white wall

An Adjustable Head and a Lamp You Can Change, Which Most Slim Bars Gave Up

Slim integrated bars won the market by being thin and tidy, and they gave up two things on the way. The first is aim: a fixed bracket points where it points, and the picture has to be hung to suit the light rather than the other way round. The second is the lamp, sealed into the tube for life. This fitting keeps both. The head angle is set after the plate is fixed, so the beam can be pointed down the face of a canvas or forward onto a mirror. And the G9 lamp behind the hood is a consumable, not a component, so a failure in five years is a lamp to buy rather than a fitting to replace.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Is the lamp included?

It takes a G9 lamp, which you buy separately. That is the honest cost of a fitting you can relamp: an LED G9 is inexpensive and lasts for years, a filament style G9 gives a warmer, more visible glow behind the hood, and either can be swapped when it fails rather than replacing the whole light.

Why choose this over an integrated LED bar?

Two reasons. The head angle can be set after mounting, so the beam is aimed at the picture rather than wherever the bracket points. And the lamp is replaceable, so the fitting outlives its light source. Against that, a G9 lamp is a point source, so the light is more directional and less even than a diffused strip.

What does chrome look like against gold?

Chrome is the bright silver of the pair and reflects the room around it, which suits a cool scheme with white, blue or steel in it. Gold is warm and closer to brass, and it sits with gilt frames and wood. Both carry the same hooded shade and the same stepped plate.

Which width for my picture?

These are small fittings by design. The 9.8 inch head suits a print or a small framed piece, the 13 inch one a medium canvas or a narrow mirror. Over a wide painting a longer tube style bar spreads the light better, since a single hooded head concentrates it in the middle.

Does it need an electrician?

Yes. It is hardwired, with the supply coming through the wall into the round plate and a common push switch controlling it. The switch is not supplied. Set the fixing height with the head angle in mind, since the aim is adjusted afterwards but the plate is not.

Can it go in a bathroom?

On a dry wall above a mirror, yes. The rating is IP20, which gives no protection against water, so keep it clear of the shower and of direct spray.

Traditional wall sconce with a metallic finish

Chrome Against Blue and Gold Against Green, and Why Neither Is More Correct

The two finishes were shot in two rooms and the pairing is instructive. Chrome appears above an arched mirror on a deep blue wall, where a cool bright metal reads as deliberate and picks up the coolness of the paint. Gold appears above a framed print in a dark green corner and beside a pleated table lamp, warm metal against warm scheme. Neither is more correct, and the light they give is identical since it comes from the same G9 lamp behind the same hood. The choice is about what is already on the wall: cool paint, steel and glass point to chrome, while wood, gilt frames and warm paint point to gold.
