The alabaster cube of the sculptural table lamp lit and seen close

Hand Carved Roots in Solid Wood Holding a Tilted Cube of Translucent Alabaster

Two opposite things sit on top of each other. Underneath is a hand carved base that reads as curling roots or tentacles, splayed outward well past the shade so the footprint is wide, the mass is low and the piece grips the surface it stands on. Above it is the plain geometric opposite: a cube of alabaster, smooth and unornamented, set off axis so it looks balanced rather than placed. Alabaster is a soft translucent stone cut thin enough for light to pass through, so lit the cube glows from inside with its natural veining showing in the stone, and unlit it reads as a matte white block against the wood. Two sizes are offered, 39 cm across and 29 cm tall or 55 cm across and 42 cm tall, and the larger is the main object on a console rather than an accessory. Three carved finishes: light wood, walnut and black. No two bases are identical and no two stones vein alike.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Which size should I pick?

The smaller one is 39 cm across and 29 cm tall and fits a nightstand, a compact console or a side table. The larger is 55 cm across and 42 cm tall and needs a wide console or a broad side table, where it works as the main object on the surface rather than an accessory.

What is alabaster?

A soft translucent stone, usually gypsum, cut thin enough for light to pass through. That is why the cube glows rather than simply reflecting: the light travels into the stone and the natural veining shows up inside it. Unlit, it reads as a matte white block.

Will my lamp look exactly like the photos?

Close, not identical. The base is hand carved, so the curl and the spread of the roots differ between pieces, and alabaster veining is natural and never repeats. Those are the two parts that make each one specific rather than defects.

Is a bulb included?

The socket is E26 or E27 and accepts an LED or an Edison bulb. A warm LED brings out the cream in the stone; an Edison filament adds a visible glow through the translucent faces. Keep the wattage modest so the stone does not sit against a hot source.

Is it stable with the cube set off axis?

That is the job of the carved roots. They splay outward well past the shade, so the footprint is wider than the cube and the mass stays low. Allow the full diameter of the size you pick on a flat surface, and keep the cord clear of a walkway.

How do I clean the alabaster?

A soft dry cloth for dust, and a barely damp one patted dry for light marks. Nothing acidic or abrasive: alabaster is soft and scratches or etches easily. Wipe the carved wood along the grain and dry it at once, working into the hollows between the roots.

An Open E26 or E27 Socket, an Inline Switch and Soft Stone That Scratches Easily

The socket is standard and left empty: E26 or E27, LED or Edison, no bulb supplied, so the character of the glow is chosen rather than fixed. A warm LED brings out the cream in the stone and keeps the running temperature low, while an Edison filament puts a visible point of light behind the translucent faces. Keep the wattage modest either way, because a cube of stone sitting close around a hot source is not what you want. The control is an inline push button on the 150 cm cord, and the lamp needs nothing installed: plug it in and set it down on a flat surface, allowing the full diameter of whichever size you chose. Care is where alabaster differs from glass. It is soft, so it scratches and etches easily: use a soft dry cloth for dust, a barely damp one patted dry for marks, and nothing acidic or abrasive. The carved wood takes a barely damp cloth along the grain, dried at once, working into the hollows.
