Walnut slatted shade lit above a round dining table

Scandinavian Ceiling Light with a Slatted Wood Shade in Natural or Walnut

The shade is a cage, not a surface. Narrow wood slats stand upright around a metal frame with an even gap between each one, so the lamp inside is hidden from directly below but the light escapes sideways through every gap. Over a table that means a clear working light without a bright source in anyone's eyeline, and on the ceiling it means a fine ring of stripes that moves as you move around the room. The profile is a flattened lens, wide across with a short cone on top where the cord enters, so it stays close to the ceiling rather than dropping into the room. Two finishes change the piece completely: natural wood is warm and nearly disappears against a pale wall, walnut is dark enough to read as a solid object. Two sizes, 43 cm and 55 cm across, cover a small table and a full one.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What do the slats do to the light?

They hide the lamp from directly below and let the light out sideways through the gaps. You get a usable pool on the table without a bright source in your eyeline, plus a fine ring of stripes thrown onto the ceiling and the nearest wall, which shifts as you move around the room.

Natural wood or walnut?

Natural sits in the same register as most furniture and blends into a pale room, so the light leads rather than the fixture. Walnut is much darker and keeps a hard outline against a white wall, which makes the piece the first thing you notice. The shape and the sizes are identical in both.

Which size should I take?

The 43 cm suits a small dining table, a counter or a hallway. The 55 cm is the full dining table size. Both are shallow for their width, 28 cm and 35 cm deep, so neither drops far into the room and both work under an ordinary ceiling height.

Which bulb should I fit?

The base is E26 or E27 and an LED lamp suits it. Choose a frosted lamp rather than a clear filament one: because the slats are spaced apart, a clear bulb shows as a hard bright point through the gaps from some angles, while a frosted one keeps the striped effect even all the way around.

Will two shades look identical?

They will match as a design but not grain for grain. The shade is handcrafted, so the figure of the wood and the exact spacing of the slats vary a little between pieces. Hung as a pair that reads as a handmade set rather than as a mismatch, which is usually the reason people choose wood in the first place.

How do I clean the slats?

Dry only. Use a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest suction and work along the slats rather than across them, since dust settles on the top edge of each one. Avoid a wet cloth and household cleaners, which mark a wood finish. This is an indoor fitting, away from steam.

Choosing Between Natural Wood and Walnut, and Hanging the Slatted Shade

The finish decides how loud the fixture is. Natural wood sits in the same register as most furniture, so the shade blends into a pale room and the light does the talking. Walnut is much darker and holds a hard silhouette against a white wall, which makes the piece the object you notice first. If you are hanging two or three in a line, one finish throughout reads as deliberate; mixing the two only works when the drops differ clearly as well. Size is the simpler decision: the 43 cm over a small table or a counter, the 55 cm over a full dining table. The bottom of the shade normally sits around 75 to 85 cm above the surface. The fixture takes an E26 or E27 base, and a frosted lamp is the better choice because a clear filament shows as a hard point through the gaps. Dust the slats dry with a soft brush. Indoor rooms only.
