Scandi Pendant Light Where Three Metal Discs Do All of the Optical Work

A short cylinder sits at the top of this fixture, three flat metal discs step out and back in below it, and an opal diffuser closes the bottom. That stack is not decoration, it is the optics. The discs overlap enough to hide the source completely from any seated angle, so there is no glare across a table. Between each pair of discs a narrow gap lets a band of light escape sideways, which washes the ceiling and the nearest wall and keeps the room from going dark around the pool of light. What is left goes down through the diffuser as an even, soft beam. It is the shape Scandinavian lighting arrived at in the 1960s and kept, because it solves glare without hiding the bulb behind something opaque. The body is metal throughout.

Why is the shade made of separate discs?

For the optics rather than the look. The discs overlap enough to hide the bulb from any seated angle, so there is no glare across a table, while the narrow gaps between them let bands of light escape sideways onto the ceiling and the nearest wall. The opal diffuser at the bottom sends the rest down as a soft even beam.

Does it glare when you sit under it?

From a seated position the discs cover the source completely, which is the reason this shape exists. What you see from a chair is the underside of the opal diffuser, evenly lit, and the bands of light on the ceiling above. Standing directly beneath it you still only see the diffuser, not the bulb.

Is there more than one size?

One size only: 36 cm across and 35 cm tall, on a 120 cm cord. That is a mid sized pendant, large enough to sit alone over a small round table and modest enough to hang in a pair or a row over a longer one. The only choice to make is the color.

Which color should I take?

Black makes the fixture read as an outline against a pale ceiling and lets it recede, which suits a room that already has plenty going on. Red, carried through to the cord, makes it the object in the room. The red is saturated rather than muted, so it works against wood and white and fights a warm pink or terracotta wall.

Is the bulb included?

Yes, an LED bulb comes with the fixture, so it works as delivered. The cord runs 120 cm, which is enough for a normal ceiling over a table and can be shortened at installation. There is no dimmer in the fixture itself, so plan the level with the switch or the circuit it sits on.

How do I clean it?

A soft dry cloth over the painted metal discs, top and underside, and the same on the opal diffuser. Anything greasy comes off with a barely damp cloth followed immediately by a dry one. Switch the fixture off and let it cool first, and avoid any scouring cloth, which would mark the paint on the disc edges.

Choosing Between the Black and the Red, and What Each One Does to a Room

There is one size, 36 cm across and 35 cm tall, so the only decision is the color, and it is not a small one. In black the fixture reads as an outline: the discs register as a stack of dark horizontal lines against a pale ceiling and the piece recedes into the architecture, which is what you want when the room already has a lot going on. In red, with the color carried through to the cord, the fixture stops being a fitting and becomes the object in the room, and everything else has to be planned around it.
