Gold bar lit on a wall of framed prints above a walnut chest with a picture frame

One Ornament on an Otherwise Plain Bar, Which Is What Keeps It From Shouting

Rustic fittings usually make the whole lamp the statement: a whole antler, a whole branch, a whole cast animal. This one puts a single small stag head at the pivot and leaves the rest as a clean lit tube on a flat plate. The effect over a framed print or a round mirror is a fitting that reads as quiet from across the room and as deliberate up close, which is the only version of this idea that survives in a bathroom or a hallway you walk past ten times a day. In gold it warms a wall of prints. In black or white it almost disappears, and the head becomes a small silhouette above the glass.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Does the bar really tilt?

Yes. The joint under the stag head is the pivot, and the tube swings on it once the plate is screwed down. That matters more than it sounds: a fixed bar has to be hung at exactly the right height to land its beam on a picture, while a tilting one forgives an inch or two either way and can be re-aimed if the art changes.

How far does it stand off the wall?

7.1 inches on all three widths, which is a real projection rather than a token one. It is enough to clear an ordinary frame and land the light on the face of the picture. A very deep shadow box or a thick gallery stretcher will still shade itself, so measure the frame first.

Which width for a mirror?

Take about two thirds of the glass. A 24 inch mirror suits the 15.7 inch bar, a 36 inch mirror the 23.6 inch and a 48 inch mirror the 31.5 inch. Over art the same rule applies to the frame rather than the room, since a bar wider than the piece lights the wall on both sides of it.

Is the stag head cast or applied?

It is a cast metal piece finished to match the body, seated on the pivot rather than glued to the tube. In the gold version it reads as the one warm detail on an otherwise plain fitting. In black and white it is quieter, closer to a silhouette than an ornament.

Does it need an electrician?

Yes. It is hardwired: the plate covers a junction box, the supply comes through the wall, and there is no cord or plug. A common push switch drives it and that switch is not included, so it is wired back to whatever the room already has.

Can it go in a bathroom?

Above the mirror on a dry wall, yes. The rating is IP20, which means no protection against water, so keep it clear of the shower and of direct spray.

Tilt and Projection Are What Turn a Decorative Bar Into a Working Light

Two numbers decide whether a bar like this lights a picture or just sits above it. The first is projection: 7.1 inches from the wall on every width, far enough that the beam leaves the tube in front of an ordinary frame instead of level with it. The second is the tilt at the pivot, which lets you aim the light down the face of the piece after the plate is fixed rather than hoping the mounting height was right. Together they mean the same fitting works over a low framed print, over a tall mirror, and over a canvas that gets swapped for a different one next year.
