Chevrons, Crosshatching and Beaded Ribs Cut Into the Body of the Lamp Base

What separates this from a plain turned lamp is that the pattern is cut into the material rather than printed on it. Bands run around the body in sequence: rows of beaded ribs, then chevrons, then crosshatched panels, each band stopping where the next begins, so the eye reads the base as a stack of registers rather than as one decorated surface. A pale patina finish is laid over the whole thing and settles lighter in the cut lines than on the raised parts, which is why the pattern stays legible from across a room without any contrast of color. Two profiles carry the same treatment. One tapers from a wide foot up to a narrow neck, the other sits round and low like a jar, and the difference between them is a matter of stance rather than of decoration.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What is the difference between the two models?

The profile of the base and a few centimeters of height. Model A is 40 cm across and 69 cm tall, Model B is 38 by 66. One base tapers from a wide foot into a narrow neck, the other is round and squat like a jar.

What does the patina finish look like?

A pale, chalky surface that sits lighter in the carved lines than on the raised parts, so the pattern reads through tone rather than color. It is a finish over the carving, not a paint effect printed on a smooth surface.

Is it too tall for a nightstand?

For a small bedside table, yes. At 66 to 69 cm these are console, sideboard and side table lamps. On a standard nightstand the shade would sit above eye level when you are lying down, which puts the bulb in view.

Which bulb does it take?

A standard E26 or E27, LED or Edison, not supplied. Because the shade is open at the top and the bottom, a frosted bulb keeps the glare down when you are seated below it.

Is the light directional?

The cloth shade is open at both ends, so part of the output washes the wall above and part falls on the surface below, with a soft band of light through the fabric between them.

How do I clean the carved base?

Use a soft dry brush and work along the cut lines, since dust settles in the grooves and a damp cloth drags it deeper. Use a lint roller on the cloth shade.

A Shade Open at Both Ends, and What 66 to 69 Centimeters Actually Means

Height is the first thing to settle. These lamps stand 66 and 69 cm tall, which is well above the usual bedside range and puts them on a console, a sideboard, a hall table or a generous side table. On a standard nightstand the shade would sit above eye level from a lying position, which means looking straight at the bulb, so the pairing to avoid is a low bed with a high lamp. The shade itself is beige cloth, open at the top and the bottom, so the light does two things at once: part of it washes up the wall behind and part falls on the surface below, with a softer band coming through the fabric between them. That is why a frosted bulb suits it better than a clear filament one, which would be visible under the hem. The socket is a standard E26 or E27 and takes LED or Edison, with no bulb supplied.
