Brass tube lit above a framed artwork beside a fern in a brass planter

The Base Is the Period Detail, Which Is Why the Fitting Reads as Nineteen Thirties

Look at the parts separately and the tube is ordinary. It is the base that dates the piece: a squared block stepped in layers, flat to the wall, deliberately visible where a modern fitting would hide its plate. That is drawn from the wall lights of nineteen thirties cinemas and hotel corridors, where the fixing was part of the ornament rather than something to be concealed. In a room with paneling, picture rails, deep skirtings or old timber it looks like it has always been there. In a room of plain plaster and flush doors it will read as a deliberate period note, which is a different but equally good reason to take it.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What makes the shape retro rather than modern?

The base. A modern bar hides its fixing behind the smallest plate it can get away with. This one makes the fixing part of the design: a squared, stepped block flat against the wall, which is how theater and hotel fittings were drawn in the nineteen thirties and which reads immediately as a period shape.

How far does the tube reach?

The fitting measures 11.4 inches from the wall to the far end of the tube, with the neck holding it clear of the base. That is enough to light a framed print of moderate size and to keep the light forward of the wall rather than washing straight down it.

What size picture suits it?

A framed piece between about 16 and 24 inches wide. It is an accent fitting rather than a wash across a large canvas. In pairs, either side of a chimney breast or a doorway, it also works as room lighting in a hallway where a single fitting would look stranded.

Can I dim it?

As supplied it holds one level. The order carries a single warm output with no dimming build. If the circuit already has a dimmer, take one of the TRIAC builds in this range instead, because a dimmer on this driver causes flicker rather than dimming.

Does it need an electrician?

Yes. It is hardwired, with a supply and a box behind the stepped base and the switch on the wall. The base is square, so check it covers an existing round box opening before you take the old fitting down.

Can it go in a bathroom?

On a dry wall, yes, though the shape suits a hallway or a study better. The rating is IP20, which is no protection against water, so keep it clear of the shower and of direct spray, and dry any condensation off the base where water can sit in the steps.

A Pair of Small Fittings Beats One Large One on a Wall With Several Frames

A hallway or study wall usually holds more than one picture, and a single bar in the middle lights the piece beneath it while leaving the rest in shadow. Two of these, spaced to sit above the outer frames, put light across the whole arrangement and give the wall a symmetry it did not have before. It costs a second box, which is why it is worth deciding before the electrician arrives rather than after. At 11.4 inches each, a pair reads as considered where a single long bar reads as a compromise.
