A Hand Woven Mulberry Silk Gourd Shade on a Brass Stem and Walnut Foot

The shade is the reason to choose this lamp and the reason it is not cheap. It is mulberry silk, woven by hand and gathered into a flattened gourd shape, with the ribs of the weave standing out across it as vertical lines that stay visible whether the lamp is lit or not. Silk diffuses very evenly, so a single bulb inside it reads as one warm surface rather than a bright spot behind fabric, and because every shade is woven individually the pattern is never quite the same twice. Below it the structure is a study in two materials: a plated brass stem that flares into a trumpet where it carries the shade, dropping into a black walnut neck and a round walnut foot with a brass collar at the joint. The proportions are useful rather than showy at 30 cm across and 48 cm tall, high enough to read beside on a nightstand and substantial enough for a console or a sideboard.

What does the remote do?

The same thing as the button on the base: on and off. Neither dims. The point of it is reach, so a lamp on a console by the door or at the far end of a sideboard can be switched from where you are sitting rather than by crossing the room.

Which bulb does it take?

One E27 medium screw base, and standard E26 medium base bulbs fit it too. The bulb is not included; a 40 to 60W equivalent LED in 2700 to 3000K warm white is the match that suits the silk.

What is the shade made of?

Hand woven mulberry silk, gathered into a flattened gourd shape. The ribs of the weave stand out as vertical lines across it, which is visible lit and unlit, and because each shade is woven by hand the pattern is never identical from one to the next.

Is the base solid walnut?

The neck and the round foot are black walnut and the stem between them is plated brass, flaring into a trumpet where it meets the shade. A brass collar marks the joint at the foot.

This lamp can be switched two ways and both do the same thing: the push button on the walnut base, and the remote control supplied with it. Neither dims. What the remote buys is reach, and that is worth more than it sounds: a lamp on a console by the front door, at the far end of a sideboard or on the second nightstand only gets used if it can be turned on from where you already are. The fitting is deliberately ordinary, one E27 medium screw base that also accepts standard E26 bulbs, with the bulb left to you; a 40 to 60W equivalent LED in 2700 to 3000K warm white is the match that suits woven silk. It runs corded on AC 110 to 240V with the plug chosen at order, and belongs indoors in dry locations. For care, the silk is dry only, dusted with a soft brush down the ribs rather than across them, while the walnut takes a barely damp cloth along the grain and the brass a dry one.

Returns and Refunds

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.

Can I change my mind after ordering?
