The first is the pivot: the cylinder head turns on the face of the stone, so the beam can be aimed down onto an open book, out across a nightstand, or back at the wall when you want the light without the glare. The second is the chain. At 50 cm it hangs low enough to reach from a pillow, which is the difference between switching the lamp off yourself and asking someone to cross the room. Neither is the sort of feature that photographs well, and both are the reason a bedside fitting gets kept rather than replaced.

What makes it a reading light?

The head tilts and the chain is long. Together they mean you can drop the beam onto a page rather than onto the wall, and switch it off without leaving the pillow. A fixed sconce with no local switch does neither.

How long is the pull chain?

50 cm, which is longer than most. That is deliberate: it puts the end of the chain within reach of someone lying down rather than someone standing beside the bed.

How far does it stand off the wall?

10 cm at the head, and the plate itself is flat against the plaster. It is shallow enough for the strip between a bed and a corner, and shallow enough not to catch a shoulder in a hallway.

Which lamp should I use?

An E26 or E27 lamp, not included. A warm 2700K to 3000K lamp suits the stone. Pick a wider beam angle if you want a soft pool on the page rather than a tight circle, since the head has no diffuser of its own.

Will the stone match the photographs?

Close, not identical. Travertine forms with voids and bands of color, so the pitting shifts from one disc to the next. On a piece this plain that variation is most of what you look at.

How do I clean it?

Let the lamp cool. Dust the travertine dry and lift marks with a barely damp cloth, drying at once, and keep acidic cleaners off the stone. Wipe the wood head along the grain.

Eighteen Centimeters of Stone, Which Is Why It Fits Beside a Bed at All

Scale is what lets this piece go where a reading light is actually needed. The plate is 18 cm across and the whole fitting projects only 10 cm, so it occupies the narrow strip between a headboard and a corner, or the wall above a nightstand that already carries a stack of books. A shaded sconce in that position either crowds the bed or has to be mounted so high that the beam misses the page. There is a second consequence worth knowing: because the stone plate is flat and matte, it reads as a small wall object in daylight rather than as a light fitting waiting for dark, which is not true of most bedside hardware.

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items.
