The Shadow Problem Is the Only Real Reason to Pay Attention to That Arm

Put a straight floor lamp beside an armchair and the shade ends up level with your shoulder or behind it. Your own body then blocks the light and you read in a shadow you cannot see because your eyes adjust. The forward arm moves the shade about a foot into the space in front of the chair, which puts the light source ahead of your shoulder line and the page out of the shadow. It is a small piece of geometry and it is the difference between a lamp that looks like a reading light and a lamp that works as one. Why does the arm lean forward?

So the shade sits over your lap rather than over the floor beside the chair. A straight stem puts the light behind your shoulder and you read in your own shadow. The forward offset is the entire reason this shape exists.

Is 68.9 inches the right height beside an armchair?

It puts the bottom of the shade above a seated head, which keeps the bulb out of your eye line and the light on the page. Beside a low sofa it reads taller than usual, which is fine, but check your ceiling in a room under eight feet.

How wide is the base?

15.7 inches across, so it needs about a foot and a half of clear floor. That fits between an armchair and a wall in most rooms, and it is small enough to move when you rearrange the furniture.

Can I dim it?

As supplied it holds one level. It ships with one 15W LED bulb and a switch on the cord. A dimmable build is available on request, and a plug-in dimmer with a compatible bulb will also do the job.

What bulb does it use?

An E27 screw base, one bulb included at 15W and about 1500 lumens in warm 3000K. Because it is a socket and not an integrated LED you can change the color temperature later by changing the bulb.

Does the fabric shade yellow over time?

Fabric shades pick up dust before they discolor. Brush the outside every few months and keep the bulb to the rated wattage. An LED at 15W runs cool, which is the main reason shades survive longer now than they used to.

A Small Round Base Is Worth Far More Than It Sounds in a Furnished Room

Floor lamps usually fail on footprint rather than on light. A tripod needs three feet of clear floor and ends up in a walkway, and a heavy stone disc cannot be moved once it is down. This base is 15.7 inches across and the whole lamp is about 17.6 lbs, so it slots into the gap beside a console table or a window and you can pick it up with one hand when the room changes. In a rented flat that matters, because the lamp follows the furniture instead of dictating it. The trade is that it will not balance a long reach, which is why the arm here is short.

Returns and Refunds

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.

Can I change my mind after ordering?

Yes. If you change your mind within 24 hours of placing your order, before it has been processed, we will refund you right away. After an order has shipped, please follow the standard return process described above.
