Does the open weave throw light on the ceiling?

Some, and that is the point of it. A wicker dome leaks a pattern of light sideways and upward as well as down, so the lamp lifts the whole corner rather than cutting one bright circle. If you want a hard pool of light on a book, a metal or fabric shade does that better. If you want a warm corner, this is the shade that gives it.

Is the shade real rattan?

Yes, woven natural rattan, which is why the color shifts between shades and why the weave is never identical twice. It also means it is light, it will dent rather than break if it meets a doorframe, and it should be dusted with a brush rather than wiped with a wet cloth.

Where does the touch switch sit?

On the pole, at hand height when you are standing beside the base. Touch it once for on, again for off. There are no steps and no memory, so there is nothing to learn and nothing to reset after a power cut.

Will 33 inches of reach clear an armchair?

It clears the arm and the front of most chairs and stops short of the middle of a deep sofa. Thirty three inches is the compact reach in this range, chosen so the lamp can stand beside a chair in a normal room rather than hang over a table across it. For a longer overhang look at the arcs with a 57 inch reach.

Can the shade be swapped for fabric?

It hangs from the arm on a fitting made for this shade, so we do not sell a fabric alternative for it and we do not encourage improvising one. If a linen drum is what you want, take one of the arcs built around a drum instead: the geometry is drawn for that weight and that width.

Is it heavy enough to stay put?

At just under 22 pounds it is the lightest of the arcs here, because the shade is wicker rather than metal and the base is a disc rather than a slab. It stands steady on a hard floor and on a rug. It is not the one to pick for a room where a large dog or a toddler regularly meets the pole.
