A stacked block of lit cubes above a dining table set for a meal

A Block of Cubes Above a Table Behaves Like Architecture, Not Like a Light

The large versions of this fitting stop reading as a chandelier once they are up. Twenty five or thirty six blocks of stone packed into a square two feet deep is closer to a piece of masonry suspended over the table, and that is what makes it work in a room with hard surfaces and straight lines. It does not soften a room the way a cluster of globes does. It states a mass. The light comes out between the cubes rather than from a visible source, so the underside is a grid of warm gaps, which is the part you actually sit under and the reason to see one lit before deciding.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What is the difference between the two 36 light versions?

Height only, and the price is the same. The compact one is 19.7 inches deep and reads as a block above a table. The tall one drops 47 inches and is built for a stairwell or a double height space where the fall is the point.

Which version over a dining table?

The 18 or the 25 light block. Both are around two feet deep and sit as a single mass above the table. The spirals are better in a corner or a stairwell, where you see the full drop from the side.

How are the cables set?

They arrive long and are cut when the fitting goes up. That is what decides whether you get a tight block or a loose spiral, so the arrangement is worth agreeing with your electrician before any cable is cut.

Are the bulbs supplied?

Yes, a G9 bulb in every cube. On the 36 light version that is thirty six bulbs in the box. They are replaceable and G9 is a common base, so you are not tied to a single source for spares.

What does the 36 light version weigh?

Thirty six blocks of stone on one plate is a structural fixing rather than a ceiling box. Write to us before you specify the fixings and we will send you the weight in writing.

Is the brass plate visible?

Yes, and on the block versions it is a square plate almost as wide as the fitting. It is polished rather than brushed, so it picks up the light from the cubes below it. That is worth knowing if your ceiling is dark.

The Spiral Versions Need to Be Seen From the Side to Make Any Sense at All

The 7, 9 and 12 light versions are built around a fall rather than a footprint. Every cable is a different length and the cubes turn as they descend, so what you are meant to read is a line moving through space over three or four feet. From directly underneath that line collapses and you see a scatter of squares, which is why these versions belong in a stairwell, a corner, or above a round table where people sit at eye level with the lower half of the drop. Put one on a flat ceiling in the middle of a room and you have paid for a shape nobody can see.
