Glass orb sconce lit on a wall beside a window with slatted blinds

An Opal Glass Sphere Sitting in the Notch of a Small Solid Wood Bracket

There is almost nothing to this fitting, which is the reason it works on a wall where a larger sconce would take over. A small solid wood bracket screws to the wall and carries a notch; a sphere of white opal glass sits in that notch. Total dimensions are 13.5 cm each way, about the size of a grapefruit, and the fitting has no arm, no joint and no projection to speak of. The glass is opal rather than clear, which changes the light entirely: instead of a filament visible through a lens, the whole sphere glows evenly and light leaves it in every direction, including back onto the wall behind. Two wood finishes are offered on the identical body, natural oak with an open pale grain and a dark walnut. The bulb is a G9, which is small enough to disappear inside a sphere this size.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Is it bright enough to read by?

The glass is opal, so light leaves the sphere evenly in all directions rather than as a beam on a page. It works as a soft light beside a bed or in a hallway; a tilting head sconce is the better choice for reading.

What bulb does it take?

A G9 base, LED or filament, not included. G9 lamps are small, which is what lets the sphere stay this compact. Choose a warm tone if you want the glass to read cream rather than white.

How is it switched?

Two ways. There is an inline switch on the cord near the plug and a pull cord at the fitting itself, so it can be turned off from the bed without reaching for the outlet.

Why are there only four photographs?

Because these are the images of the natural oak version, and we would rather show you that than a walnut piece we have not photographed. The walnut shares the same body and bracket. Write to us if you want a walnut image before you decide.

Does the glass get hot?

A G9 lamp sits close to the glass, so the sphere warms up in use. Let it cool before handling it, and prefer an LED G9 over a halogen one, which runs considerably hotter.

Which plug do I need?

Choose at checkout: US, UK or EU. For the United States and Canada pick US.

Glass orb sconce lit on a pale wall, the cord running down beside it

Two Switches, a Visible Cord, and an Honest Word About This Short Gallery

The fitting plugs in, with a 150 cm cord running down to the outlet, so mounting it means two screws and no electrician. It carries two switches rather than one: an inline push switch on the cord, and a pull cord at the fitting itself, which is the one that matters beside a bed since it can be found in the dark without sitting up. The cord to the outlet stays visible, as on any plug in wall fitting. One point about this page. The dark walnut is a real option on the same body, but we have no image of it, and rather than tint a photograph or show a different product we say so plainly and keep the gallery short.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is free on every order, with no minimum purchase. The price you see at checkout is the price you pay for delivery.

How long before my order ships?
