Walnut bar lit above a wood desk with a laptop and a cup

The Same Five Centimeter Wood Bar, With a Cord Where the Wall Cable Would Be

This is the plug in version of a bar that also exists hardwired, and the body is identical: solid pine or walnut, 4.5 cm square in section, with a frosted acrylic strip running its length and the LED sealed behind it. Depth from the wall is 5 cm regardless of the length, which is what lets the bar pass for a piece of trim rather than a light fitting. What changes is the supply. Instead of a cable into an electrical box, a 150 cm cord leaves one end of the bar and carries an inline push switch on the way down to the plug. The practical effect is large: no electrician, no box, no wall switch on the circuit, and the fitting can move to another wall or another apartment. Three lengths, 60, 80 and 120 cm, are offered in both woods, and either version mounts horizontally or vertically.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Does it need an electrician?

The cord runs 150 cm to a plug and carries an inline push switch, so the only work is fixing the bar to the wall. That also makes it a fitting a tenant can take with them.

Can it be mounted vertically?

Yes. It works both ways, horizontal above a desk or a bed and vertical beside a doorway or a sideboard. Vertical mounting puts the cord exit at the bottom, which is the tidier of the two.

How visible is the cord?

Visible. It runs from one end of the bar down to the outlet and is not concealed. If a clean wall matters more than the ease of installation, the hardwired version of the same bar is the one to choose.

What is the difference between downlight and up and down?

Downlight puts everything below the bar. Up and down adds a band above it, which lifts the wall rather than only lighting the surface underneath. Both cost the same on this plug in version.

Which plug do I need?

Choose at checkout: US, UK, AU or EU. For North America pick US, which is the standard two pin flat blade plug used in the United States and Canada.

Is the bar dimmable?

As supplied it runs at a fixed 3000K with an inline on and off switch. The plug in version holds one level, unlike the hardwired build, so plan for that or choose the hardwired one if dimming matters.

A Visible Cord Is the Trade, and Vertical Mounting Is the Way to Make It Disappear

Every plug in wall fitting makes the same bargain: you skip the electrician and you live with a cord. There are two ways to handle it. Mount the bar vertically beside a doorway or a sideboard, with the cord leaving the bottom end, and the cable drops the short distance to a baseboard outlet almost unnoticed. Or mount it horizontally above a desk or a headboard and let the cord fall behind the furniture, which is how most of the photographs are staged. If neither works for the wall you have in mind, the hardwired version of the same bar solves it properly at the price of an electrician. The inline push switch sits on the cord within reach, so no wall switch is needed either way.
