Walnut urn base lamp seen from an angle with the scalloped shade top

A Fluted Urn on a Stepped Pedestal Foot, Carved Rather Than Simply Turned

The base is built from a classical profile: a stepped pedestal foot, a swelling body cut with vertical flutes, a waisted neck, and a small collar where the socket sits. Flutes are what separate this from an ordinary turned base, because they run against the grain of the turning and catch light in alternating bands, so the body reads as carved even from across a room and holds its shape in a dark corner. The proportion is deliberately classical too, with the widest point of the urn low down and the neck pulled in tight, which is what lets a 40 cm shade sit on top without the lamp looking top heavy. Two finishes treat the same carving differently: a warm walnut tone keeps the flutes visible as light and shadow, while a flat black removes the timber from the conversation and leaves a pure outline.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

How large is it compared with a normal table lamp?

Noticeably larger. A typical table lamp is 45 to 50 cm tall with a 30 cm shade; this one is 57 cm tall with a 40 cm shade, so it needs a console, a sideboard or a wide chest rather than a small nightstand.

Why is the top of the shade scalloped?

To break the outline. A 40 cm shade finished flat at the top would read as a heavy cylinder; cutting the top edge into petals lightens it and gives the lamp the tulip shape the name refers to.

Is the base really carved?

Yes, the body is fluted and the pedestal foot stepped, so the profile catches light in vertical bands rather than reading as a smooth turned shape.

Which finish for a dark room?

The walnut tone, which keeps some warmth and lets the carving show. Black works better against a pale wall, where the urn reads as a drawn silhouette under the pale shade.

Which bulb does it take?

A standard E26 or E27, LED or Edison, not supplied. A shade this size takes a reasonably bright bulb comfortably, and a frosted one keeps the glare down since the bottom is open.

How do I clean it?

Brush the flutes of the base dry with a soft brush, since dust collects in the grooves, then wipe the flat areas along the grain with a barely damp cloth. Use a lint roller down the pleats of the shade.

A Scalloped Top Edge, and What a Forty Centimeter Shade Asks of a Room

Most pleated shades finish flat at the top. This one is cut into a scalloped edge that opens like a row of petals, and the reason is proportion: at 40 cm across, a shade closed flat at the top would read as a heavy drum, while the cut edge lets light escape upward and breaks the silhouette so the lamp looks lighter than it is. That is the tulip in the name. What the size asks in return is surface. At 57 cm tall on a 40 cm shade this lamp anchors a console, a sideboard, a wide chest or a generous desk, and on a small nightstand it will overhang the edge and sit above the reading line. The socket is a standard E26 or E27 for LED or Edison bulbs with none supplied; a shade this size carries a brighter bulb comfortably, and a frosted one keeps the open bottom from glaring.
