The Wood Closes Around Each Globe Instead of Bolting It to a Flat Plate

This is the detail that separates the piece from every other globe sconce in the category. Normally a glass orb is fixed to a backplate with a metal collar and a visible screw ring, and the eye reads two components: hardware, then shade. Here the body is carved so that a hollow receives the lower half of each globe, and the wood rises around it. No collar, no ring, nothing to see where the two materials meet. The result is that the glass looks set into the form rather than attached to it, and the whole fitting reads as one carved object with light inside it. The trade off is that it has to be carved rather than pressed, which is also why no two bodies come out the same.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

One globe or two?

One reads as a small sculptural accent and suits a narrow wall or a bedside. Two fills the body and gives roughly double the output, which is what you want above a console, on a dining wall or where the sconce is the only light in the corner.

Why are the globes set into the wood?

So they read as held rather than attached. The carved hollow closes around the lower half of each orb, which removes the visible collar and screw plate that a surface mounted globe needs, and it is the detail that keeps the piece looking carved rather than assembled.

Will two pieces match?

In form and in finish, yes. In grain, no. The body is carved from solid wood and the light and dark faces fall differently on every piece, so a pair either side of a bed will read as a pair without being identical. Order them together if you want them as close as possible.

Which lamps does it take?

One G9 lamp per light, not included. A G9 is a small two pin capsule, not a screw base, so an E26 or E27 bulb will not fit. A warm 2700K to 3000K capsule keeps the wood warm and the opal cream.

Is it bright enough to read by?

The two light version gives a usable pool beside a chair. Neither version is a task light: opal glass spreads the output evenly in all directions, so what you get is ambient light with a soft edge rather than a beam on a page.

How do I clean it?

Let the lamps cool. Wipe each opal globe with a barely damp cloth and dry it. Dust the carved body with a soft brush rather than a cloth, since the hollows and the curve hold dust, and wipe along the grain.

Dark Walnut on One Face and Pale Sapwood on the Other, Cut From One Piece

The two tone running along the body is not a stain or an inlay. It is the boundary between heartwood and sapwood in the same board, kept rather than cut away, so the pale edge follows the curve of the carving and lands differently on every piece. Keeping it means each fitting carries a line that can only have come from one particular board, which is the reason the form reads as carved rather than pressed. It also means the piece changes character depending on how it is lit: with the globes off, the wood grain is what you look at; with them on, the pale edge catches the light and the dark face recedes.
