Nightstand Table Lamp on Stacked Wood Pebbles
Two flat pebbles of wood are stacked one on the other and a slim rod rises between them to carry the shade. That is the whole base, and it is why the lamp reads as an object rather than as a fitting: the discs are cut and sanded by hand, so no two stacks line up the same way and the grain runs differently on each one. Above them the shade is a straight cylinder wound in hemp rope, which breaks the light into fine vertical lines and gives the fixture a texture that a plain fabric drum does not have. The proportions are made for a bedside table: 22 cm across and 40 cm tall keeps it inside the footprint of a standard nightstand and puts the light at reading height rather than in your eyes. Two finishes are offered, the natural wood stack and a black one, and they change the piece more than the size would.
