Three rippled base lamps side by side in light wood, walnut and black

Rings Turned Into One Piece of Timber, Swelling and Pinching as They Rise

The base is a single piece of wood on a lathe, not an assembly. Rounded rings swell outward and pinch back in as they climb, widest at the shoulders just under the socket and narrowing into a cone where the lamp meets the table, and because the profile is cut rather than built up from separate discs each transition is clean and throws its own shadow line. That is what makes the ripple legible from across a room, with the lamp switched off, in a shape only 22 cm across. Three finishes come off the same profile and behave differently: light wood keeps the whole lamp quiet, the walnut tone sits comfortably with existing wood furniture, and black removes the grain from the conversation so the rings read as a drawn silhouette against a pale wall. Every base is solid timber, so grain and depth of tone vary from one lamp to the next.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

How is the rippled base made?

It is turned on a lathe from solid timber, so the rings are cut into one piece rather than stacked as separate parts. That is why each swell and pinch throws a clean shadow line and why no two lamps have the same grain running through them.

Which finish suits a pale room?

Black, if you want the base to register as a shape. Against a pale wall the rings read as a drawn silhouette. Light wood keeps everything soft, and the walnut tone sits with most wood furniture without competing.

How heavy is it?

About 2.4 kg, which is enough to stay put on a 22 cm foot without being awkward to move when you clean the surface underneath.

Where does the light go?

Up and down. The tapered shade is open at both ends, so a broad circle falls on the surface and a wash climbs the wall, with a softer glow through the fabric between them.

Which bulb does it take?

A standard E26 or E27, LED or Edison, not supplied. Because the shade is open at the top, a frosted bulb keeps the filament out of view when you stand beside it.

How do I clean the rings?

Use a soft dry brush in the grooves between the rings, where dust settles first, then wipe the raised parts along the grain with a barely damp cloth and dry them at once.

A Tapered Shade Open at Both Ends, on a Lamp Built for a Living Room Side Table

The shade is a plain tapered cream cone, open at the top and the bottom, and that is a deliberate counterweight to a busy base: a printed or textured shade on top of turned rings would leave nothing for the eye to rest on. Practically, the open ends split the output, so a broad circle drops onto the sideboard or side table below and a wash climbs the wall behind, with a soft band coming through the fabric in between. That is ambient light with enough downward throw to read by in an armchair pulled up beside it. At 50 cm tall and 22 cm across, and about 2.4 kg, this lamp is sized for a sideboard, a console or a side table next to a sofa rather than for a narrow nightstand. The socket takes a standard E26 or E27 bulb, LED or Edison, with none supplied.
