Table lamp with a brass double arch carrying a ruffled milky glass bell

Two Brass Arches, a Counterweight, and a Glass Bell Hanging From the Front

The structure is a small piece of balance engineering. Two brass finished arches rise from the turned walnut column, one behind the other, and the glass shade hangs from the front arch while a small brass counterweight sits on the back one. That is why the lamp does not feel front heavy despite carrying a glass bell out beyond its own base: the load is pulled back over the column. It also puts the light out in front of the lamp rather than directly above its foot, which is what makes the arrangement useful on a desk or a console where you want the pool of light where your hands are. Both arches are fixed, so aiming the lamp means turning it on the foot, and lifting it means holding the wood column rather than the arch or the glass.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What is the difference between the two glasses?

Milky white is opaque, so the shade glows evenly and hides the bulb completely. Amber crackle is translucent with fine internal cracks, so the lit shade shows its own texture and casts a warmer, patterned light. They price differently for that reason.

Why are there two arches?

One carries the shade and the other balances it. The glass hangs off the front arch, and the small brass counterweight on the back one keeps the load over the column rather than out in front of it.

Does the arch adjust?

Both arches are fixed, so the height and the reach of the shade are set. To aim the light, turn the whole lamp on its foot.

Which bulb does it take?

A standard E26 or E27, LED or Edison, not supplied. With the milky glass the bulb is hidden, so any frosted or clear bulb works; with the amber crackle a frosted bulb keeps the crackle pattern even.

Is the glass fragile?

It is pressed glass rather than thin blown glass, so it is sturdier than it looks. Still, it hangs from a single fitting: lift the lamp by the wood column, never by the arch or the shade.

How do I clean it?

Let the bulb cool, then use a soft dry cloth on the glass, working into the ruffled rim. Use a dry cloth on the brass to avoid water spots and a barely damp one along the grain of the walnut column.

Milky White or Amber Crackle: Two Glasses That Give Two Different Lamps

The glass choice matters more than the price difference suggests. Milky white is opaque: the bulb disappears entirely and the bell glows as one even surface, which is the quieter and more formal of the two and reads almost white in daylight. Amber crackle is translucent and shot through with fine internal cracks, so the lit shade shows its own structure, the light comes out warmer, and the cracks throw a faint pattern onto the surface below; in daylight it reads as honey colored glass rather than as white. Both are pressed glass with a ruffled, wavy rim, so the lower edge breaks the light into scallops instead of finishing flat. The socket underneath is a standard E26 or E27 with no bulb supplied, and a frosted bulb keeps the crackle version even.
