Warm Walnut Against Bright Chrome, Which Is the Period Pairing Itself Here

Strip away the styling language and mid century lighting comes down to a handful of material decisions, and this fitting makes all of them. A short wide drum of warm wood rather than a tall fabric shade. Bright plated metal left bright, not brushed down to something quieter. A band running around the body with the fixing studs on show instead of concealed. A ball joint that is visibly a joint, so the mechanism is part of what you look at. And a frosted lens set flush into the base so the lamp itself never shows. None of that is a reproduction of a particular piece. It is the vocabulary those pieces were drawn from, used at a size that still fits a modern wall.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

What makes it read as mid century?

The pairing and the proportion. Warm turned wood against bright plated chrome, a short wide drum rather than a tall shade, a visible band with exposed studs, and a ball joint left on show instead of hidden. Those are the moves period spots were built from.

Can I aim it?

Yes. The head tilts and turns on the chrome ball joint, so you can drop the beam onto a console, push it into a corner, or angle it up the wall. Set it once at installation or change it whenever the corner changes use.

How much space does it take?

Little. Dia 13 x H 16 cm, about the size of a coffee cup, on a small round plate. That is why it suits the wall beside a framed print or the strip above a narrow console where a shaded fitting would crowd.

Where does the light go?

Down, mostly. The frosted lens sits in the base of the drum and the walnut body blocks the sides, so what you get is a pool below the fitting rather than a wash across the wall. Aim it before you decide where it goes.

Which lamp should I use?

An E26 or E27 lamp, not included. A warm 2700K to 3000K lamp keeps the walnut warm against the chrome. A cool lamp pushes the whole fitting gray, which is the one thing worth avoiding here.

How do I clean it?

Let the lamp cool. Wipe the frosted lens with a barely damp cloth and dry it. Wipe the walnut along the grain, and buff the chrome dry rather than polishing it, since polish collects in the band and around the studs.

The Ball Joint Means the Same Fitting Works in Three Different Corners

A small sconce with a fixed head is only right for one job, and you find out which one after the electrician has left. Here the head tilts and turns on its chrome joint, so the beam is yours to place. Aimed down it becomes a pool over a console, a stack of books or the end of a bed. Pushed out it lifts a dark corner without lighting the whole room. The joint is stiff enough to hold where you set it and loose enough to change by hand, so the fitting can follow the room as the room changes.
