The Cone Sends Light Straight Down, Which Is What Makes It Work Over a Bed

A shade that spreads light in every direction is the wrong tool beside a headboard, because half the output ends up in the eyes of whoever is not reading. This one is a spun iron cone, closed at the top and open at the base, so almost everything it produces leaves underneath in a defined pool. Mounted at about seated shoulder height beside a bed, that puts usable light on a page and very little anywhere else. The same behavior explains the other places the shape has always been used: above a desk where a screen is in play, over a console in a hallway, beside a bookcase in a study. It also frees the surface a table lamp would take, which in a small bedroom is often the deciding factor.

Where does the light go?

Down. The cone is closed at the top and open at the base, so nearly all the output leaves underneath in a defined pool. That makes it useful over a bed, a desk or a console and less useful as the only light in a room.

Black or white?

The black cone reads as a silhouette and holds its own on a pale wall or beside dark furniture. The white cone disappears into a light wall and bounces a little more light back off its own inner surface, so the pool below is slightly softer.

Which lamp does it take?

An E26 or E27 lamp up to 40W, not included. A warm 2700K LED gives an even pool; a filament lamp suits the period shape and shows a little through the opening at the base. Keep to the 40W limit.

Is it good beside a bed?

The downward cone keeps the light off your face and on the page, and it frees the nightstand that a table lamp would occupy.

Can I aim it?

The stem is a fixed bend rather than a joint, so the cone hangs where it hangs. Set the mounting height to suit the use, roughly at seated shoulder height beside a bed and a little higher above a console.

Spun Iron, a Bent Stem and a Turned Wood Disc, With Nothing Else Going On

Three parts and no ornament. A round disc of pale wood goes against the wall, a single bent metal stem rises out of it in one curve, and a spun iron cone hangs off the end of it. That is the entire fitting. The reason a shape this plain has lasted since the middle of the last century is that it stays out of the way: at Dia 15 x H 24 cm it is small enough to repeat along a corridor or to pair either side of a bed without the wall starting to look busy, and the wood keeps it from reading as industrial. The cone comes in black, which makes the outline the thing you notice, or in white, which lets it settle into a pale wall and leaves only the pool of light below.

Returns and Refunds

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.

Can I change my mind after ordering?

Yes. If you change your mind within 24 hours of placing your order, before it has been processed, we will refund you right away. After an order has shipped, please follow the standard return process described above.
