Red glass dome above a wooden dining table

Mid Century Pendant Light with a Glass Dome that Closes Underneath the Source

The shade is one piece of glossy glass, wide and flattened, and the detail that matters is underneath: it is closed rather than left open. A diffuser sits inside the glass, so the light bounces once before it leaves and comes out as a bright even beam with no visible source from a seated position. That is what makes a low shade usable above a table where people look across at each other. Seen from the side the lit shade turns into a soft halo, which is the reason the fixture reads as an object in the room and not only as a light. Two colors are offered. The deep red is the one that carries the mid-century reference and it holds a room on its own. The white is quieter and works where the ceiling is already busy. The fitting is iron and the source is a G9 LED.

Questions about this product

Everything you need to know about this product.

Why is the underside of the shade closed?

So the source never shows. A diffuser sits inside the glass and the light bounces once before it leaves, which gives a bright even beam downward and no bulb in view from a seated position. An open shade of this shape would put the source straight in the eye line of anyone sitting at the table underneath it.

Which size should I choose?

The 32 cm version is only 15 cm deep, so it suits a study, a bedroom or a counter without eating headroom, and it works well in a pair. The 43 by 20 cm version is the dining table size: wide enough for a table of four to six, deep enough that the halo effect reads from across the room.

How high should it hang over a table?

The bottom of the glass usually sits around 75 to 85 cm above the table surface. Because the underside is closed there is no bulb to avoid, so this fixture can hang a little lower than an open shade without becoming uncomfortable, which is worth knowing under a low ceiling where headroom is tight.

What does the red look like in a room?

It is a deep red rather than a bright one, closer to oxblood than to scarlet, and it reads as a saturated block of color against a pale wall. It is the version that carries the mid-century reference and it will be the first thing anyone notices. The white is the choice where the ceiling already has something going on.

Which bulb does it take?

A G9 LED. That is a small pin base rather than the screw base most pendants use, so check what you have on hand before you plan a replacement. The fixture runs on a range of 90 to 260 volts and the light is warm, which suits the red finish and an evening dining room.

How do I clean it?

A soft dry cloth on the outside of the glass is usually enough, and over a kitchen counter a barely damp cloth followed immediately by a dry one takes off anything greasy. Switch the fixture off and let it cool first, and support the shade from below rather than pressing on the glass. This is an indoor fitting.

Choosing Between the 32 and 43 cm Sizes and Placing an Enclosed Shade Well

The two sizes do different jobs. At 32 cm across and only 15 cm deep the fixture is shallow enough to hang in a study, a bedroom or above a counter without taking headroom, and it works in a pair where one would look lost. At 43 by 20 cm it is the dining table version: wide enough to hold a table for four to six and deep enough that the halo reads from across the room. Over a table the bottom of the glass usually sits around 75 to 85 cm above the surface. Because the underside is closed, the fixture can hang lower than an open shade without putting a bulb in anyone's eye, which is useful under a low ceiling. The base is G9, the fixture runs on 90-260V and the light is warm. Wipe the glass with a soft dry cloth. Indoor use only.
