The Slats Throw Bars of Light, So the Fitting Decorates the Ceiling as Well

A closed shade lights the table and leaves the ceiling dark. An open slat lantern does something else: the lamp inside throws bars of light up and sideways through the gaps, so the ceiling and the nearest wall pick up a striped pattern that changes as you move. In the cafe and brick room photographs that pattern is doing half the work of the room. Two things control it. A clear filament lamp gives hard, sharp bars, while a frosted lamp gives soft ones. And the closer the fitting hangs to the ceiling, the tighter and brighter the pattern reads, which is worth a trial before you cut the chain to length.

Is the frame solid wood?

Yes. The specification lists iron, wood and hemp rope. The two crossbars and the lantern slats are wood, the chains and canopy are iron, and a turn of rope dresses the joint at the middle.

What does the slatted shade do to the light?

It breaks it. Each lantern is an open cage of vertical slats, so the lamp inside throws bars of light and shadow onto the ceiling and the nearest wall. That pattern is the point of the fitting, and it is strongest with a clear lamp.

Which lamps should I use?

E26 or E27, one per lantern, not included. A clear filament lamp gives the sharpest slat pattern. A frosted lamp softens the bars and cuts glare, which is the kinder choice directly over a dining table.

How wide a table does the six light cover?

The beam is 100 cm, which suits a table for six to eight. The three light at 50 cm is for a table of four, a breakfast nook or a small kitchen island.

Does it need assembly?

Some. The beams and the canopy arrive apart in the carton, and the lanterns fit to their chains on site. Budget an hour and a second pair of hands for the six light, which weighs about 6 kg.

Six Lanterns on a Beam Read as One Fitting Rather Than a Row of Pendants

You could hang six separate pendants over a long table and get the same amount of light. What you would not get is one object. The crossed beams hold all six lanterns in fixed relation to each other, at the same height and the same spacing, from a single canopy and a single junction box. That matters practically, because six pendants means six ceiling points and six chances to be a few centimeters out. It matters visually too: a beam reads as a deliberate piece of furniture for the ceiling, where a row of separate cords reads as a lighting plan. Over a 180 cm table, one six light beam is usually the better call.

Returns and Refunds

How do I return an item?

You have 30 days from the date you receive your order to request a return on eligible items. To start, email us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and the reason for the return, and we will send you the return address and instructions. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.

Do I have to pay for return shipping?

No. On approved returns, we provide a prepaid return shipping label at no cost to you. Please note that a return should never be sent to the manufacturer's address; only to the address our team provides.

I received a damaged or defective item. What should I do?

We are sorry to hear that. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, please refuse delivery if you can, then contact us at support@orodwell.com with your order number and a photo of the item. We will prioritise your request and arrange a replacement or refund in line with our Refund Policy.

Can I change my mind after ordering?
